Rewind - A Moment in Jaguars History

#1
(This post was last modified: 03-15-2024, 09:21 AM by JagFanatic24. Edited 3 times in total.)

It was 1997 and the Jaguars just came off a magical playoff run in just their 2nd season of existence.

Preseason game against the New York Giants, and defensive lineman Jesse Armstead hits Mark Brunell low and causes Brunell to leave the game with a knee injury. We later found out that he would miss the start of the regular season, which would move Rob Johnson in as the starting QB.

Week 1, the Jaguars face the Baltimore Ravens and Rob Johnson had a game for the ages. Still the highest completion percentage for a single-game and the highest passer rating for a single-game, for a QB that started the game. Johnson finished the game with 325 total yards and 3 total TDs with a completion percentage of 83.33% and a passer rating of 145.5

Most importantly he battled a high ankle sprain during the game and Johnson was carted off the field at one point. He came back into the game, down 27-21, with his ankle heavily taped up and was able to throw the final TD pass which helped the Jaguars win the game 28-27.

The butterfly effect of Armstead hitting Brunell and causing a knee injury, led to Johnson having the best game of his Jaguars career and his only start in Jaguars History in week 1 of the 1997 season, which then led the the Buffalo Bills trading their #9 overall pick in the 1998 draft for Rob Johnson, which then led the Jaguars to pick future hall of famer Fred Taylor, who finished his NFL career with 14,079 total yards, and he became a Jaguars Legend.

I remember watching that preseason game against the Giants and I would have never guessed Brunell’s injury would have turned out like it did.

It ended up being a huge moment in Jaguars History, 27 years ago…

That's a great story, and you tell it perfectly, but I would add one interesting little twist, and that is, before "which then led the Jaguars to pick future hall of famer Fred Taylor," Coughlin tried to trade the #9 and #21 picks to the Bengals for the #5 pick, because he wanted to draft Curtis Enis.  Fortunately, the Bears turned us down.

Something similar happened with another Jaguars great running back…

2006, Greg Jones was the Jaguars RB2, behind Fred Taylor. During the scrimmage that year, Jones was wearing the knee-high-white socks and was primed for an expanded role.

2006 was also the year the Jaguars drafted Maurice Jones-Drew in the 2nd round, as he joined a crowded backfield with guys Alvin Pearman, LaBrandon Toefield, and future Pro Bowler, Montell Owens, and of course the greatest Jaguars RB of all-time, Fred Taylor. (Fred, MJD, Montell all future Pro Bowlers at this point, and Jones was a Pro Bowl alternate at one point…talk about a stacked backfield)

Preseason game #3 the Jaguars play the Buccaneers, and Greg Jones took a handoff and rushed for a 7 yard gain and ended up tearing his knee up.

Jones-Drew was elevated to RB2 and the rest is history.

Fun Fact: Jones-Drew only played 1 game with Drew on his jersey, which was against the Miami Dolphins during the preseason.

karmic offset for this has to be sprinting to the podium to snag Lefty and the Ravens "settled" for Suggs, right?

That game killed and gave birth to a Jags HOF career...
...Didn't Kurt Warner break those Rob Johnson records with the Cards at The Bank?

The mock draft guys though #9 was kind of early for Taylor. New England thought he would last until their pick, and they had to take Robert Edwards instead.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.

Good ol Robert Edwards gave me one good Saturday in the 90s. He was well on to a seemingly great career before he tore his leg up.

Glad it worked out with Freddie T because some guy named Randy Moss went #21 in the draft that year.    We could have had James Stewart @ RB, and also R. Moss, J. Smith, and K McCardell @ WR.

James Stewart went on to average ~ 1,200 yards from scrimmage per year (Rush + Rec) from 1999-2003.

Smith and Moss/Alan Faneca would have been nice. James Stewart was a bust but it doesn’t get talked about because of Means and Taylor. Another reason it doesn’t get talked about is because of his 5 TDs vs the Eagles.

Etienne would be considered a bust if his numbers turned out like Stewart, who never rushed for more than a 1,000 yards in a season as a Jaguars player.

Stewart also retired after the 2002 season.

From 1995 to 1998, Stewart averaged 505 yards rushing per season. In 4 seasons, he had 6 games with 100 yards rushing.

Stewart was not a bust.  A bust doesn't have an eight year career and have two one thousand yard seasons (and one 900 yard).  You have a funny definition of a bust.

James Stewart was a decent back.  Not as good as we had hoped, but definitely not a bust.

These are 1st round pick, James Stewart’s first 3 seasons rushing yards. By week 14 in 1996, Natrone Means became the featured back. In 1997, Means was still the featured back.

1998, Stewart had back to back 100 yard games and then went down with an injury in the 3rd game, which led to Fred Taylor securing the position and never looking back. The Jaguars drafted 3 running backs in 1998, in Taylor, Banks, and Howard.

As a 1st round draft pick, Stewart became a bust after 2 seasons. He played 5 seasons in Jacksonville, and never rushed for more than 1,000 yards in a season. Over that span, the Jaguars acquired Natrone Means, Fred Taylor, Tavian Banks, and Chris Howard.

Banks had the career ending injury, and Taylor was often injured during the 1998 and 1999 seasons, and Chris Howard couldn’t hang on to the football, which allowed Stewart to hang around.

If Travis Etienne’s first 3 seasons ended with 500,700,500, he would be considered a bust also.

So his career ended after three seasons.

As I said previously, really dopey definition of a bust.
