I know a guy who was a father with kids, one of which was in college, when his father, who had been a widower for a while at that point, disowned him. He, his wife, his grown kid, his not quite grown kids, all changed their last name to his dead mother's maiden name.
Hope I never have to deal with family drama like that but I'm not going to criticize them.
