The 2024 Olympics
|
I don't know how many of you are watching the Olympics but I figured I'd make a spot for all of us to chat about it anyway.
I'm looking forward to gymnastics and the road cycling road race and individual time trial as well as the track cycling events. Hubby is all about beach volleyball. We'll probably catch the swim events as well. Anything you guys are looking forward to watching? We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
I watched about five minutes of the pre opening ceremony and shut it off. I looked up highlights and I don't understand what I just saw. I hope the actual events are better than that hot mess.

There didn't seem to be a common thread. It was just a bunch of unrelated crap.
I tuned in for a few minutes and saw they were floating the athletes down the Seine on boats. That’s different, I thought.
Then they showed Lady Gaga doing a burlesque type routine with feather fans and dancers while she sang in French. It was all very lovely and entertaining but completely out of place for an Olympics opening ceremony.

Being as the opening ceremony showcases the culture and history of the host nation as well as the athletes, it seems France is similar to the mind of a person with severe ADHD without the benefit of meds. All over the place with no clue what's going on. The athletes seemed to be an afterthought. Currently watching women's synchro diving. This and synchro swimming are fascinating to watch. I can't imagine the time and effort it takes to do those sports. Our two ladies look more like they do CrossFit.
Kinda borderline political, but..
https://x.com/CollinRugg/status/18172861...TLKuw&s=19 JUST IN: Telecommunications company C Spire has removed all advertising from the Olympics after they mocked Christianity in their opening ceremony. C Spire is the sixth-largest wireless provider in the United States. "We were shocked by the mockery of the Last Supper during the opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympics. C Spire will be pulling our advertising from the Olympics," the company announced on X. Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves chimed in after the announcement. "I am proud to see the private sector in Mississippi step up and put their foot down. God will not be mocked. C Spire drew a common-sense, appropriate line."

I hate Peacock and only have it for the Tour de France that just finished up last weekend and the Olympics, but I have to give them credit. There isn't any sport they don't have covered and on demand replays mean you can watch it on your time so if a triathlon starts at 3am live and you don't want to watch it then, you can watch the replay of it when it's convenient for you.
Also, the replay option doesn't have commercials if you have Premium Plus.
I turned on the opening ceremony only to realize they are making up countries. As far was what I'm rooting for, I think it's rain and water pollution.
I just watched a video from Sky News Australia and they're talking about how offensive the mocking of The Last Supper was (both Christian and non-Christian found it offensive) but also mentioned the Olympic flag being upside down. One of them mentioned how an inverted flag means 'distress' which I have only ever associated with the American flag or flags of other nations.
I just found that to be interesting. If anyone wants to discuss it we should do so in the political forum. Watching a surfing competition is a lot of hurry up and wait when the swells aren't happening. I was wondering where they would be surfing and they're in Tahiti. Last night the two guys we watched had to wait forever for something to happen. At least the commentators were Australian (I love that accent) and weren't annoying as hell. One guy representing Japan in surfing has an Irish name....Connor O'Leary. I was like - what? Lol. Evidently his mom is Japanese and he was born and raised in Australia. He was really good yesterday. Today's competition was cancelled after the 3rd round due to a storm. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
I think certain Olympic sports are governed by different agencies so i'm not certain the boxing decisions but I do know Women's Swimming banned TGs from competing. That idiot Lia Thomas dude appealed it in court (I think Switzerland) but lost -- Thank God !!

So now instead of simply beating women in swimmy8ng, they can cause brain damage to them in a boxing ring. Awesome.

I'm watching the men's team gymnastic finals and I guess the OIC doesn't have rules regarding tattoos. This Italian gymnast has a boatload of them. I'll bet the female gymnasts wouldn't get away with it.
I love watching men's gymnastics. The power they use on the vault to the absolute control they must have on the rings. Going from an iron cross, through a few swings right to an inverted iron cross with the rings/ropes staying as still as possible. The tumbling on the floor routine is crazy. The high bar release moves that make your butt pucker. Frederick Richard is absolutely amazing on the high bar. His routine is fantastic. I thought his dad was going to have a coronary in the stands cheering for him. Fun fact: all gymnasts rotate from one apparatus to the next is the same order for every Olympic competition. Vault, bars, beam and floor for the women. Floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, high bar for the men. All gymnasts will follow this order regardless of which apparatus they start on. For example, if a gymnast starts her competition on the balance beam, she will rotate through the events in Olympic order, finishing her competition on the uneven bars.

She is the worst and the whole opening performance was a joke, except for Celine Dion. That was almost inspiring. Steph's career has been in decline for years now, and I doubt this rights the ship. I found it especially disturbing that all those expensive pianos were getting soaked.

I'm watching the women's gymnastics team final I learned the name Alice is pronounced Ahleachay in Italian. The name Jade is pronounced Jagee. Ja is like Za as in Zaza Gabor and gee is like geez without the Z. I think that was Brazilian.
Love her, hate her or feel indifferent about her, Simone Biles is formidable when she's in her element and good mental health. Congratulations to the women's team for winning gold but even more awesome is the men won a team (bronze) medal for the first time since 2008. Mountain biking is terrifying to watch, specifically when they're traversing rocky areas and such. I say this as someone who at the age of around 10 or so I witnessed my 8 year old sister break her arm in a bike crash right in front of me and gave me a fear of broken bones, but strangely enough not a fear of riding bikes. Skateboarding is also butt puckering to watch. Lol The guy who won is also competes in cyclocross and in road racing and rode the Tour de France until he tested positive for and was pretty sick from Covid. |
