Defensive Package Idea

#1

I was sitting back listening to this Lotto talk from Gus on the mothersite and it got me thinking.  If Skuta is playing Lotto and is put at Leo in certain packages, will that allow Fowler to free roam the DLine like he did at Florida?  I would definitely like that package especially if they sub Skuta out for Ryan Davis in said situation since he's better on the line.  On the other hand, they could also get creative.

I also played with the DLine in that scenario and thought about Malik on the one end with Yannick/Davis/Werner/Skuta on the other.  That would allow marks and Day to play inside with Fowler free roaming to pick a point of attack.  LBs would ideally be Telvin and Jack.  Corners would be Ramsey, House, and Prince/Colvin post suspension.  Safety would be Single high with Gipson.  Sample/Cyprien could also be brought in with a player coming out and any position if need be IDK.

What are your thoughts and opinions?

It's very difficult to come up with Defensive Packages because in the current NFL, the Defense is a reaction to the Offense and their personnel groupings. As has been pointed out before, the NFL is about matchups and how to exploit them. Defensive schemes in general are a bit less arduous, but challenging in their own right. So, in order to come up with a Defensive Package I feel like it's necessary to ask what the Offensive personnel alignment is that the Defense will be facing.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

The Defense needs Poz on the field (if healthy & 100%) I don't know why you didn't list him?  They will move Fowler Jr around like they did Odrick last year, and Ryan.  I wouldnt be shocked if they did the same with Malik too.

I'm thinking 12, 21, and 22 personnel groups.

1 RB, 2TE, 2WR

2RB, 1TE, 2WR

2RB, 2TE, 1WR.

I was saying this as a 2 LB set and I REFUSE to let Poz be the coverage LB in this package.  Also I was referring to Fowler standing up not with his hand in the dirt.  I guess you just have to watch some Florida tape on him.

EDIT:  This is also mainly 3rd down situations more than likely and its not an every down Defense just a package they can use when they see the offensive personnel.  Just Relax and Breathe.

Yeah, but how often does an NFL Offense even run 21 or 22? I could have sworn that I read where Offenses now run 11 or 10 most of the time. It's why the FB is pretty much a non-factor nowadays.

I think the base set up is to go with three down linemen, one Safety (ostensibly Gipson), three to four corners and have the rest be LBs. This way, if you have Fowler fill a LB role, then you can have him target specific linemen matchups that he can win against.

The only thing with 3 down lineman is which 3 are the best 3 that you go with and I only planned on blitzing one LB and that was Fowler so Jack and Telvin would be in coverage.  Jack on the TE and Telvin on the RB and with 3 corners and one safety that takes care of at least 3 WR.  If an extra TE is brought on then Gipson can cover the TE and keep Telvin on the RB.  With 4 lineman creating pressure and fowler used as a free LB then Man Coverage is not a bad idea if the package creates almost immediate pressure.  With no one being able to get doubled I think it would definitely be worth a shot and probably would be successful if not overused.

Edit I like what your saying I just would rather use 3 corners and one safety instead of 4 corners.

I have a feeling we'll be seeing alot of 21 and 22 from the Mularkey coached tacks.

Certain teams do run with those formations and that's all I was saying.  If we see the personnel on offense to use this package then why not.  The only debate brought up was what would the offense be running and I wasn't saying this is a base formation for every time the defense sees the field.  Based on those personnel groupings, I wanted to hear/read opinions and other options but all I see is a debate that has little to do with what i'm saying.

Responding to the other custom formation thread begs the question, why is there fear to explore exotic packages?  NFL teams do whatever to score or stop the Offense from scoring with multiple formations.  Yet, one package can't be used to rush the passer when it fits?   I'm appauled lol.
