Day 1 analysis from the "experts"

#1

Peter King had this to say about the Jaguars-indirectly.

Quote:

9. I think there are few teams (in fact, the Giants and Jacksonville might be the only ones) that have improved their defensive front sevens as much as Arizona, after Chandler Jones (for a second-round pick) was imported to play right end, and Robert Nkemdiche—the first-rounder—was picked Thursday night to play left defensive tackle, mostly likely.

From Andy Benoit from MMQB...

Quote:

5. Jacksonville: Jalen Ramsey, CB, Florida State

Typically, zone-based defensive teams do not invest high first round picks in cornerbacks. Those spots tend to be used on pass rushers. But hence, the selection of Dante Fowler No. 3 overall last year, and the mega-signing of ex-Bronco Malik Jackson this offseason. With the front seven restocked, the Jags had flexibility to improve the back end. Which brings us to the more important thing: Jacksonville’s style of zone defense. It is identical to Seattle’s, which means it’s really more of hybrid coverage foundation, with man-to-man on the perimeter and zone helpers inside. Aggressive, long-armed corners thrive in this sort of scheme, where the sideline and those zone helpers present a little more margin for error. Ramsey is a prototypical press corner, and that’s how he’ll be used. If his well-documented abilities to play safety become a factor, it means something went terribly off-plan.

Nate Davis of USAToday...

Quote:

5. Jacksonville Jaguars – Jalen Ramsey, DB, Florida State: He's got a very good claim he's the best defender in this draft. Ramsey joins a Jags defense that allowed the most points in the AFC (448) in 2015. A former tracker star with freakish athletic ability, Ramsey has the versatility to guard anyone from slot receivers to tight ends. He can play press coverage or deep safety. The only knock on him was a modest ability to turn the ball over as he had just three interceptions in three years with the Seminoles. He told me during a pre-draft interview he wants to play throughout the secondary and would also like the opportunity to return kicks to provide him additional opportunities to get his hands on the ball.

From Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News

Quote:

While the Rams and Eagles were doing their QB tango, and the Chargers and Cowboys went Buckeye wild. Jacksonville benefited in getting the draft's best all-around athlete.

The Jaguars have longed for this kind of impact corner, and he complements their other playmaking additions in the secondary — Prince Amukamara and Tashaun Gipson — very well. Gus Bradley learned how to use ball-hawking defensive backs during his days in Seattle, and that's about to pay off for a young team that is on the verge of becoming a playoff team.

From Walterfootball...

Quote:

5. Jalen Ramsey, CB/S, Florida State A+ Grade

Stupid teams do stupid things. The Jaguars used to be a stupid team, but they've made great strides recently, and now look like they're on the cusp of competing for the playoffs. They've taken another step toward that with this pick. Jalen Ramsey is one of the top two players in the draft. Jacksonville shouldn't have been able to obtain him with the fifth-overall selection, but it did. Congrats, Jaguars! You're one of the winners of the draft.

This is a great pick, worthy of an A+. Ramsey is very talented, and he can play both cornerback and safety. Jacksonville's secondary was a complete mess, but that's no longer the case with Ramsey on the roster.

5) Jacksonville Jaguars: DB Jalen Ramsey – This is a dream scenario for GM Dave Caldwell and head coach Gus Bradley, who now have upgraded their defense with a Day 1 impact defender. Ramsey is expected to play corner and nickel, and he also can impact special teams. What an unbelievable stroke of luck for the Jaguars, who hope to match their explosive offense with a competitive defense. Grade: A

There is also a video with Shaun King lauding the pick...

Gus Bradley: The Jaguars head coach is out of excuses for his underperforming defense. Plenty of analysts believed that Florida State cornerback Jalen Ramsey was the best player in this draft. The Jaguars were reasonably deep at cornerback even before Ramsey fell into their lap, but general manager David Caldwell smartly didn't let Ramsey slide any further than No. 5 overall.

The Jaguars have basically added two top-five picks this offseason with Dante Fowler coming off a serious injury. Free agents Malik Jackson and Prince Amukamara were also added to a defense that should vastly improve from the second-worst scoring defense in the league.

All seem like good write ups to me. How can you not write good things when the Jaguars draft the best athlete whom happens to be local, at the biggest position of need?

I mean the team has stunk at DBs for ten years, but now with Gipson, House, Jalen Ramsey, Prince, and Aaron Colvin they are instantly better (not to mention Gratz & maybe Cyprien if he can beat out Sample for the starting SS role.. and get it together).. maybe a Strong Safety will get picked up this year to compete with the two of them?

3) Chargers' folly is Jaguars' gain.
Joey Bosa at No. 3 overall? Did the Chargers miss the memo that says you're supposed to pick the best player available? Did they not remember they needed a left tackle -- heck, make that multiple offensive linemen -- to help both quarterback Philip Rivers and running back Melvin Gordon? Sure, Tunsil was enmeshed in controversy -- but if the Bolts felt he was too risky, they should've gone with eventual sixth-overall-pick Ronnie Stanley. And if, despite that glaring need, they still wanted to pick a defensive player, the Chargers could have gone with, well, the best defensive player in the draft in defensive back Jalen Ramsey.

With San Diego taking Bosa and the Cowboys snagging Elliott, Ramsey was there for Jacksonville to pounce on at No. 5 overall. The Jags and coach Gus Bradley smartly capitalized with this pick, the home-run selection Bradley needed in a big year for him. The Florida State product is an ideal fit in Bradley's defense, which ranked 29th against the pass in 2015.

Only bad things I've heard are from the ESPN on air crew. Kiper in particular.

5. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jalen Ramsey, CB, Florida State

This is a dream scenario for the Jaguars. Ramsey is arguably the best position player in this draft. Jaguars coach Gus Bradley comes from Seattle, where they covet long corners. He's a special athlete; he ran track, won the ACC long jump title, ran the opening leg of the 4x100-meter relay. He's got catch-up speed like I haven't seen. He has a different skill set. This is a different cat, and he's got a "wow" factor.

Sometimes I think Kiper gambles on the draft outcome. Perhaps he lost a bet.

So essentially if Ramsey fails and Caldwell got this wrong then so did virtually 95% of the armchair scouts and analysts.

I think I remember him changing his view on a player last year after Folwer was picked as well.

On NFL Total Access, I just saw Nate Burleson rate the Jaguars as a day 1 winner.

If Caldwell is wrong here, then so are most NFL scouts and GM's.

One thing about Kiper,, he is a DEFINITE Ravens fan. He's touted them for years. He was probably very sour when Ramsey almost dropped to Baltimore and Jax took him right before they had the chance.

No-brainer pick for Jax. Great stuff!

Too bad, so sad Mel.

I didn't watch ESPN yesterday, but I kind of figured Mel would be a jackass at some point.
