For what it's worth- Jason Cole is reporting the Chargers are expected to take an OT at 3

We discussed this yesterday, you have an aging franchise QB in Philip Rivers who's played behind one of the worst (injury plagued) offensive line in recent years, shoring up the line allows San Diego to compete (sooner than later) in that division.

Hopefully. There seems to be a lot of smoke around the Chargers taking a tackle, whether it be Stanley or Tunsil.

This would be perfect for us.

If they are smart they would do this. A left tackle is never the sexy pick but if they want to compete they should do this. As long as Rivers is getting sacked by Miller, Houston and Mack they won't stand a chance.

A left tackle is not a sexy nor a smart pick in the top 5. You're better off trading back and getting 2-3 players in rounds 2-3 for the entire offensive line

As long as I continue to see actual GMs draft LTs top 5 I'm going to think they are worth top 5 picks lol

Going back 10 years

D'Brickashaw Ferguson was picked 4th overall-NOT a bust.

Joe Thomas went 3rd overall in 2007-NOT a bust.

Jake Long went 1st overall in 2008-NOT a bust.

Trent Williams went 4th overall in 2010-NOT a bust

Lane Johnson went 4th overall in 2013-NOT a bust (though not a LT, either)

Others did not fare as well.

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

San Diego is coveting Cole Toner (OL) - Harvard

This would be a very Bold move by the Chargers.

Ink it, he's going #3.

But those players never even played in a Super Bowl. QBs like the Mannings, Brees, Flacco, Brady, Rodgers, Rothlesberger, don't need high draft pick tackles to win it all. Rivers is in the class of QBs. They just need a avg, servicable, like a Luke Joeckel type of tackle, and explosive receivers.

Whether the players above played in a Super Bowl is a completely different question than  whether it is smart to pick a LT in the top 5.  Besides, NFL history has shown guys like Orlando Pace, Jon Ogden, and Anthony Munoz were top 5 LT picks to play in Super Bowls.  Besides, it's not as if the top 5 LTs were to blame for their teams not making it to the Super Bowl.  I submit Jacksonville got as close to the Super Bowl as they did because of Boselli, and given the massive dysfunction in Cleveland, it's folly to scapegoat Joe Thomas as the reason Cleveland didn't reach the Super Bowl.

In the past, I have argued that the best teams in NFL history have emphasized skill players in the early rounds, and I still maintain that to be true.

However, LT seems to be the one positional exception.  Most teams in the NFL have first rounders at LT.

Teams have proven they can build successful OLs without spending first round picks on linemen, but you are more apt to find your LT in the first.

But Russell Okung was a top 10 pick and started in two Super Bowls for Seattle and was just signed to a big deal by the defending champs.
