Merle Haggard Dead On 79th Birthday

Country music legend Merle Haggard has died after battling double pneumonia ... according to his manager.
Haggard was diagnosed with pneumonia last year and spent 11 days at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage early this year. He died at home near Redding, CA on Wednesday morning.

Hope you've found peace Merle. As for me, I think I'll just stay here and drink.

I grew up on country music and absolutely couldn't stand to listen to what it has become over the last 20 years, or so. I am strictly 'old school', and Merle was the master. He'll never swim Kern river again.

Agreed. It is still a shock to me when I see how close to Pop music modern country is when you consider it's roots and especially the original Outlaw movement. Nothing could be further apart, yet they are all lumped into this big category by the collective musical consciousness it would seem.

My Waylon Jennings Pandora station gets a good two to three hours of play time at least three times a week.

Pop country is really just pop music. I think the current genre designation that comes closest to the type of country music I enjoy is Americana.

My favorite Pandora stations are Steve Earle and John Prine. You get a nice mix of songwriters.

We lost Merle. Damn.
