Jaguars expected to sign LB Audie Cole, among others.

Could be a key special teamer for JAX. That phase will be a point of emphasis.

Vikings fan: "Fan favorite. Good special teams player and stepped in and played pretty well when injuries forced him to start a game or two. Not sure he's capable of doing it over a season's worth of games, but I don't know the Jaguars plan for him.

The Vikings have no room to pay guys like him otherwise he'd probably be back."

Probably camp/depth/competition guy. I get there's an emphasis on ST, but how many LBs are you planning to keep just for ST? We know we'll have Jack/Telvin/Poz already. They seem to like Pullard who is really a backup/ST guy as well. Still have Skuta. And now we've added this guy and McCray (even if they list McCray as DE, he's really an undersized DE/ST LB).

And we haven't even gotten to the draft yet.

I believe Skuta's days are numbered. Cole can play ST and shows the versatility to play inside or out. I like the kid.

STs will be key according to Coughlin. This means that some guys are keeping spots over superior backups just because they can play ST. Pullard, for instance, better be good on STs or...

My take on Audie Cole is he's a very good Special Teams player,  who can contribute as a two down MLB/ Inside LB.

Yep, instead of throwing pick 6s, we're just going to punt the ball on 1st down and rely on great special teams and defense.

Caldwell had this outlined as his 5th year plan of the 7-year rebuild.

Well there's a problem with that. You can't emphasize that plan without a weapon like Anger punting.

Wasn't he a preseason all star a couple years ago? Think I remember him scoring multiple times on defense - maybe in the same game.

He returned two INTs for TDs in one game vs the bills.  (preseason)

Here he is sacking Matt Flynn - if you feel like copy/pasting for a blurry fan vid:

We got the #4 pick to address getting the next Bryan Anger.

Riley Dixon out of Syracuse had a great Senor Bowl and is projected to be the 1st punter off the board.  Factor in the Syracuse connection with Marrone. our emphasis on ST and D, and I'd have to say it's quite obvious we'll be going after Dixon in Round 3

More on Cole from Mike Kaye:

Quote:...Over the last five seasons, Cole has been a standout in the game's third phase. According to the NFL's Game Statistics Information System, Cole has produced 21 special teams tackles throughout his career.

<p style="font-family:arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(51,51,51);">His presence has a lot of value to a Jaguars special teams unit that offered up the third-most punt return yardage in the league last season.

<p style="font-family:arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(51,51,51);">“I think special teams is a very important part of the game," Cole said during a phone conversation with First Coast News.

<p style="font-family:arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(51,51,51);">"Sometimes it gets overlooked," he added. "When special teams aren’t up to par, it’s tough for teams. Hopefully this year, we can take care of business on special teams and win that phase, so offense and defense can do the rest.”

<p style="font-family:arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(51,51,51);">The Jaguars have struggled on special teams over the last few years. Coverage units have underwhelmed and specialists have been forced to alter their technique to effectively curb the instability.

<p style="font-family:arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(51,51,51);">With Cole added to the mix, the special teams unit should be able to be a bit more creative. New special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis is among the best in the business at what he does and adding Cole to his unit should lead to some relief.

<p style="font-family:arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(51,51,51);">The 6-foot-5, 248-pound player has a lot of length, which is an asset that DeCamillis can use to his advantage.

<p style="font-family:arial, sans-serif;color:rgb(51,51,51);">“I definitely think it helps,” Cole said. “I think being long definitely helps in some situations. I’d also say sometimes it doesn’t help too much. It just depends on the situation. I’ve got no complaints about my size, I guess. It’s helped me in my career to get me where I am now.”
