Olivier Vernon

Is this the guy we should go after in the offseason? Miami fans seem to think he is going to leave so maybe we can get him. He is ranked as one of the better DEs by PFF (take it for what it's worth). Miami fans say the guy is a great pass rusher but bad against the run. Maybe he could really flourish here at the LEO were he would primarily be asked to just go after the QB.

Von Miller isn't hitting the market, Bruce Irvin will probably go to Atlanta, and JPP is a risky guy with his injury. Should Vernon be the target? Thoughts?

Only if Odrick approves.

The LEO has to be able to set the edge as well, which is one of the reasons we took Fowler over others. If Vernon is here next year it's likely he won't be the full time starter at LEO, Fowler will be, and Vernon is brought in on passing downs

would love this lineup up front:

DE - Odrick

NT- Miller

DT - Marks

LEO - Vernon

OTTO - Fowler

MLB - Poz or Draft Pick

OLB - Smith

that's nice ^^^^

That would allow us to focus even more on adding secondary players in the draft. We need major upgrades there.

Fowler and Vernon can split the LEO snaps 50/50. When not playing the LEO use one as an interior pass rusher, at strong side DE, and OTTO (Fowler only) on another 20% of snaps. That way each player gets a healthy number of plays and we maximize both of their pass rushing abilities.

The best part about having multiple pass rushers is that you can rest one on the sideline for a few plays and have them come in ready to go. As the opponent's linemen wear down during the game, our guys will still be fresh.

We rotate heavily anyway so the more the merrier.

I'm thinking pass rushing linemen are going to be hard to come by in 2016 so yes Vernon should definitely be targeted

Marks and Miller are getting long in the tooth. Need to add Mo Wilkerson or draft another DT.

I like it.

Especially if we can put Jaylon Smith as MLB. (he's my first choice in the draft together with Jalen Ramsey, and I would go for either one depending on who brought in with FA, especially if we find a great safety in FA and availability)

Smith OLB, the other Smith MLB and Fowler at Otto and that's just great.

I would just consider upgrading and giving more depth at DT as well though.

Anyway back on topic I agree Vernon is a guy we should really give it a try to sign.

Jaylon Smith just went down with a knee injury. Hopefully it is not bad as I like him too.

Ouch, I didn't know that, hopefully nothing too serious. Great prospect.

There isn't going to be any 'for the right price' or 'depending on the money' with Vernon (not that there often is with non ancient FA). He's going to make serious bank...and he will probably be worth it.

Maybe that'll make him drop and we'll have our mlb of the future after next season

I'd be perfectly fine with throwing a truck full of money at both him and MO Wilkerson. I think those 2 signings and the return of Marks/Fowler would be enough for us to dramatically improve on that side of the ball in 2016. Fix the secondary and oline as best as you can in rounds 1-3 of the draft, get some decent LB depth, and this team should be ready to make a run.
