They just know what he's worth.

They literally can't sign him to an extension until after his third season.

QB is a position where if you have your guy, you will GLADLY pay him top dollar when the time comes. There's no point doing that with him at the end of year 2. He's on a 4 year deal and we have a 5th year option since he was a 1st rounder. Talk about blowing your wad early...

The current CBA prevents teams from signing draft picks currently under contract to extensions until the 4th year of their contract.

Some folks sure are in a rush to spend Shad's money to get the team into a tight cap situation. Would you rather spend the money on Blake when you really have no reason to or someone like Von Miller, Josh Norman, or whoever makes it to free agency?

Yep, and since it only applies to draft picks, Allen Hurns could sign an extension right away. I really hope Caldwell aggressively tries to sign him to a long term deal on team friendly contract before he blows up any further.

Related to what we mentioned, the Jags and Allen Hurns can have a written contract agreement as early as when the Jags season ends in Houston this coming Sunday:

For undrafted players, new contracts can be given to them after the final regular-season game of their second year in the league. Which means that Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler and all other undrafted players from 2014 can receive new contracts.

Ah, I was under the impression they could sign one at any time. Good to know.

In practical terms, being that the season ends in 5 days for the Jaguars, in essence you were correct regarding Allen Hurns.

It would make sense for both parties to come to a contract extension agreement that would give Hurns more money and security and give the Jags the rights to Hurns for 1 or more additional years beyond the time he would be a scheduled UFA.

We definitely want to extend Hurns this offseason.

1st rounders cannot negotiate before the end of their 3rd year. Even then, Jags have year 4 and the first rounder 5th year option, then the franchise tag. That's 4 years of contract play.

Besides, even if you lock him in at a bargain price, if he is a great QB, he will want to renegotiate. Not worth wasting the time right now.

Seems really stupid to be clamoring to resign a guy this early, but then what if he doesn't play well? "WE OVERPAID!"
