Respected ex Dallas VP of player personal Gil Brandt as well as other former GMs having been giving Blake very high remarks over the last few weeks about his progress from rookie to sophomore year.

Gil Brandt has the top 5 QBs over the last 2 drafts in this order:

1. Blake Bortles

2. Marcus Mariota

3. Jameis Winston

4. Derek Carr

5. Teddy Bridgewater

Because of one guy's opinion? Nah, there are a bunch of articles like this for every young QB. One week some random expert picks Bridegwater, another Carr, another Bortles, Mariota, Winston, etc. You get the idea, it doesn't prove anything except that some guy who hasn't been involved in the NFL for 30 years has an opinion.

A quick google search turned up these:

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...or-younger

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...rent-teams

http://mmqb.si.com/mmqb/2015/12/02/jamei...e-progress

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...om-1-to-32

Just on the first page of the inquiry.

What I found particularly funny was the first link is Gil Brandt saying he'd choose Carr and Mariota is a close second. I mean if you guys want to put weight in his tweet, by all means.

Some good tidbits there. Some of those articles are kind of old but some of those points still hold up. I would not say that Mariota and Winston are the best young duo to come out in over a decade, I would give that to Bortles and Carr at this point tbh....but all these articles tell me is that there are 4 new ballers in the league but that much is obvious. Bridgewater is on the outside looking in IMO

How is Bortles' rookie year even comparable to what Winston and Mariota are doing in their rookie years? Or Carr's for that matter? I think there is good reason to believe they are the best QB prospects since RG3 and Luck, and those were the best in a long time, but Mariota/Winston are doing things even they didn't do in record breaking fashion.

Bortles also didn't get coached in college by NFL level coaching, had rookies to throw to and the worst oline in the league. He wasn't good but if you watched he was in an awful scenario.

Not everyone gets the fortune of AP and a top D like Bridgewater.

The improvements by Bortles really show how mentally strong bortles is as well as the great talent he is

I'm talking big picture. Like entire career picture. At this point, in my opinion, Bortles and Carr will be a better duo than Winston and Mariota.

You don't judge and project QBs based on their rookie year.  You judge them over a long span of time.  Bortles is improving and nothing is showing that he's reach his full potential.  This is a positive for the Jags (the fact that Bortles is playing well, not someone's opinion).  There are plenty of other areas that warrant criticism fairly.  Bortles is not one of them.

I dont frequent these boards as much as I would like to Baconator but I am curious...do you have some sort of issue with Bortles? Sorry if I missed something you had said earlier

Actually, he got fired in 1989-not quite 30 years ago.

But tell us again how long has it been since YOU'VE been involved with the NFL?

How many players have YOU drafted again?

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

WoW thats saying a lot because I for one value Gil Brandt's opinion heavily over others opinions.  I would agree that Blake Bortles has played the best in the last two years among the rookies because he had almost no oline, wasnt supposed to play his rookie year, started with a bad OC, had very young WRs whom played injured, had no running game to speak of compared to other teams,

he had a lot of hits if it wasnt for his ability to move he wouldve been destroyed.

Marcus looked great against a very weak Jaguars Defense.. and despite holding the colts to only 3 points in the 2nd half.. it had more to do with the Colts not having a QB especially with Matt's injury & Luck not being suited up..

the fact is the Jaguars are the worst at stopping the pass (DBs)... so until that changes the team wont go to the playoffs.

FWIW Mike Mayock said he would have picked Derek Carr #1 overall. He usually is a good analyst, but is way off base on that one. Carr was better as a rookie, but this year Blake Bortles has been fantastic.

For me

1. Blake Bortles

2. Jameis Winston

3. Derek Carr

4. Marcus Mariota

5. Teddy Bridgewater

Winston has the it factor. Can't deny his leadership and talent. Blake is too though

Blake Bortles also has the "it factor." We need to see Jameis Winston play a second season to see how much he improves from one year to the next.

Honestly I like all these guys but Bridgewater it seems he will be a game manager decent not great.  We don't really know about the two rookies yet they both to me look very promising so far though.

No Fun
