So, I'm actually pretty optimistic...
|
I know that right now, this isn't a popular opinion, but I feel extremely encouraged about the direction of this team after this season so far.
Our GM, while putting himself behind the 8-ball originally, has managed to put together a competent team that can go toe-to-toe with most other teams in the league. This was not the case last year or the year before. Our offense, while struggling to score inside the red zone, has made huge strides. We look like a modern day offense. We look like we can score on anybody, and the majority of that side of the ball is composed of 3 year players and under. Julius is finally clicking. Blake improved dramatically, and it's logical to see the same type of improvement in year 3. Yeldon has shown flashes of what he can do when he gets a more competent offensive line. We're a couple of linemen and an offseason away from an elite unit here. Special teams, while horrifying originally, is coming together nicely. Greene as a PR is money. Meyers is getting better. Anger will probably punt here until he retires, and although he isn't the best, he gets the job done. Defense has shown flashes, and we have a few young playmakers who will likely improve. Telvin looks like he can be elite. Cyprien is finally getting better. Colvin will improve. Poz is old but still good, save coverage. Marks will come back fully healed next year. Roy Miller is playing better. We need a ballhawk at FS and another DE or two here, and some more speed at LB probably. This unit could be the focus of some strong FA additions and this upcoming draft. And lastly, the coaching staff. I know that we all have our gripes here. Gus has shown no indications that he will be the guy, but he has shown improvement in managing the game, however marginal. And I don't think enough can be said about the fact that the team continues to play hard despite its dismal record. He certainly hasn't lost the team. And that is a huge deal. Will he be the guy? I have no idea. This is the area that I have the least confidence about, but Olsen has drastically improved our offense, so I suppose it's possible the whole staff could turn it around. I think at the very least, this staff has earned another year by virtue of being in every game this year except the Patriots. Call me crazy, but I am extremely encouraged for next year. Even in a down year, I never would've expected to be anywhere near playoff talk. Thoughts? We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Most of the team's Offensive contributors are Two Year players or younger. I like that a lot. There is some good young talent on Defense, but it does have holes. I trust the Front Office to address those holes however and they have shown to be decent at talent acquisition. While I'm not ordering Super Bowl tickets any time soon, I do feel good about the direction the team is going.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.
Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!
I disagree that Marks will come back full strength next year... he's getting to that point in is overweight career where fat people fall apart and can't do their job, but still some people believe he can be an athlete. .. cut him.. he's an IR guy from now on.

Quote:I know that right now, this isn't a popular opinion, but I feel extremely encouraged about the direction of this team after this season so far. I think Caldwell is a good GM. He has his misses and the 2013 draft (across the league as well) was bad but the 2014 draft was a darn good one so far. The 2015 draft is still far too fresh to judge. The struggle to score is a BIG problem and a problem that has come with just about every NFL offense coached by Olson. That scares me. I think this team can improve in scoring despite Olson's shortcomings because guys like ARob, Hurns, Bortles etc are talented young guys. This team needs a better signal caller in my opinion. We agree on the special teams improvement. There is some talent there and I really like Greene's potential as a returner and WR. Myers is showing some consistency too which is nice. The defense has some young talent in guys like Telvin and Colvin but there the defense still needs a big influx of talent. I'm personally not a huge fan of the coverage we run but it's hard to judge when the DL can't pressure anyone consistently. Poz is nice to have from an experience standpoint but he's on his last leg. This team needs pass rushers, LBers, and safeties. Lastly the coaching staff. In terms of HC, OC and DC this might be the worst staff in the league. I'm a supporter of big coaching changes next offseason. Gus, Olson and Babich are not good enough to win this team anything. The team still plays ugly, sloppy and inconsistent. My overall thoughts are I like the talent that Caldwell has brought in and he seems to be learning at a fairly quick rate. My hope is he can learn the same in terms of picking our next Head Coach.
Everyone seems to believe that since we are young team with 2-3 year players that patience is key to establishing the championship caliber team we all desire. In actuality, what it does is bring all your young stars to their 2nd contract at the same time. While we develop guys like Robinson, Hurns, Linder, Cyprien, Smith, et. al. to elite status other teams will be signing them in their prime since we won't be able to sign them all to their market value in 2 more years. At that point, you sign who you can and hope the more recent draft picks play well enough to replace them.

Not very worried about this, personally.
Linder replaces Beadles
Cann stays at RG Replace Wiz @ Center Fowler comes back and is what we hope Draft another DE Draft at least 2 DB's

YOu Kraazee man! :woot: So... having established that, I'd just like to say I agree with you that there is reason for optimism in the up coming seasons. I don't know that I share your opinion about Gus, as I think that his record as a HC says everything there is to need to know about him... and it isn't good. The talent is better on the team now though than it has been in some time and with smart drafting and f/a acquisition (along with a healthy dose of luck) things should get better. It's a very weird set of circumstances and a weak division that even gave this team a whiff of the playoffs.
That's pretty much gone. Nope....it IS gone. Now, like an above poster said, we have a crop of Caldwell draftees....fine, continue development but you have to have a stream of players behind them. This is a continuous , dare I say the word, "process". This is what will determine how the Jaguars do next year, the year after and the years to come. We can't just draft players and wait for them to either get hurt or old. Some last longer than others but they all come out sooner or later. As far as coaching staff.....I'm just not impressed, the chargers were the worst run defense in the conference tied with the saints for the worst in the league. and what does our OC? NOTHING......and our Gus let him do it. I mean....COM'ON MAN.
Because Jaguars is our mantra

The teal tea drinking crowd tends to get ugly when someone transgresses with a 'reality check'. You may be right about Marks, but you might also be very mistaken; so, I think it would be a bit premature to cut him on speculation, don't you think? Assuming you have a team full of rookies and they all deserve 2nd contracts, yes you would not be able to sign all of them. That's not the situation in Jax. we have a ton of young players.. some will be signed others will not... then we get a new stock of young players, rinse repeat, this is the process of a complete overhaul. If you think for a few minutes you can see this is why it takes several years to fully rebuild and even longer for a total overhaul. All of our valuable players right now will be easily signed for their second contract barring injuries of outstanding progress from the bench. Next year will be the year we actually see the most progress, followed by +.500 seasons for years again barring injuries and extreme circumstances. Also, system guys are great for a team as it can lower their overall value on the open market if they play a certain scheme that isn't in need of depth in free agency. Caldwell has been extremely savvy so far with budget/cap control.. he could have offered alot more last year for some players and we would have a slightly better team this year but why sign huge contracts for players if your base isnt ready. NO SUH
Some people are just too complacent. Our vaunted offense couldn't beat a bottom 2 scoring defense last week. We have a long way to goo and we were supposed to be rebuilt by now.
So yeah this year is a big disappointment but it's not like we're 1/2 players way. We still need line help. We don't run the ball in the red zone so it's still TBD if yeldon can be a feature back. We have no rush, injury concerns to our supposed stars Marks and Fowler. Our secondary? Yikes. We are still the NFL's biggest joke (outside of Cleveland). Stop accepting mediocrity. And stop using the excuse that the roster was gutted. It was caldwells decision. Quote:Some people are just too complacent. Our vaunted offense couldn't beat a bottom 2 scoring defense last week.
