Redzone Woes. Armchair Gm's how would you fix it?
|
Ok Dave went out and got his skill guys. He got his QB, RB, Receivers, Tight End, and Tackle.
It's clear as day what the major problem is with the talent level of the team especially inside the 20's. The offensive line is not strong enough to push ahead to lead the Running back. If you have watched most of the redzone running attempts you will see there was no place for the runners to go. I'm not saying Toby is good but when the defenders were hitting him behind the LOS that's on the line. The same exact result for Robinson. In the NFL if you can't run inside the redzone you don't score. To fix it some players are going to have to be upgraded or replaced? Linder coming back will be huge but the problem is much greater than just one player. On the Defensive side its the same story. The lack of pass rush gives QB's too long. Fowler coming back may help (tbd) but when you look at this line Marks is the only consistent player. How to fix it? On the offensive side: Luke is serviceable and a decent run blocker, LG needs a big upgrade, Wiz is just decent, Linger at RG, and Parnell should stay. Maybe get some competition for Luke and try to upgrade Guard and Center. On the Defensive side: Marks is the only player I really care about keeping, There are some good backups on the team but the goal should be to get atleast another 2 starters. Fowler To Be Determined Marks should be healthy Clemons Cut Branch Cut The rest are just backups. ![]() We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
As far as the Defense goes the team needs a better FS and CB along with pass rushing DE.
In regards to the Red zone offense some of it is OC Greg Olson's fault. You simply need to look at the goaline/1yard line four run plays to Toby Gerhart to see how bad he is at times in calling plays. I mean after the first two failures why would you keep going with Slowby whom hasnt proven to be good on goalline situations? The Oline was the worst in the league its better but still below average, but Marrone has done wonders to help them out. They need to look to get TJ Yeldon the ball more in the Redzone as the Head Coach Gus Bradley had stated (though I wish he didnt tell the opposing teams each week their game plan ahead of time like he did by telling them that they are going to throw to TE Thomas more often (which even had Deon Sanders scratching his head). The more I think about it, it has a lot to do with coaching... They need to throw to TE Thomas & Lewis, screen pass to TJ Yeldon or draw plays... QB runs to the outside if they are covered.. i mean they have a few things they can do..
Offensively we need to do what's working mid field. Give Yeldon a damn touch, throw a jump ball to ARob or JT. Use a play action slant. We seem hell bent on either running up the middle or throwing fades. Blake needs to place those balls a little better, at least keep them where we can make a play, it's constantly just going out of the back of the end zone.
Defensively, bring the heat. It seems when you look at the numbers, out blitzing is effective, we have to pressure the QB that close. Make him leave the pocket. Play press man coverage. No more 10 yard cushion that Gratz gives every play.
IT WAS ALWAYS THE JAGS
Cann at LG, Linder at RG, find a real 230lb Hammerback, use a blocking back.

Yeldon was a quality red zone runner in college and has shown he can make good yards on runs outside the tackle so I'd like to see him given a chance on them...other than that Blake and the receivers just have to execute better simple as.
Blake doesn't look decisive in the red zone ,maybe some run pass options for him as I think he is more than capable of taking a hit and blowing over the line. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
Copy the exact same plays that seem to work for every other freaking team. How come every other team runs the play action wide [BLEEP] open TE play to perfection and we have the QB throwing bullet fades into the stands?

Jacksonville Jaguars are currently ranked 30th in Redzone success with 41.67% which is part of why the team has lost so many games this year despite the successful passing deep yards.
25% in the last one, 30% last 3, 33% at home which is really bad but before you flip out on OC Olson it was 40% last season so its 1% better than it was last year.. ----------------------------- The leagues best in the redzone sure you expect Carolina, Patriots, but the Jets are #1 and Detroit is #3. The team is to obivious in the Red Zone, its going to either run up the middle with a bad oline which will result in failure or most likely the team is going to throw to the corners AR15 or Allen Hurns (Recently started throwing to TE thomas). It has more to do with Olson he needs to call better plays in the Red Zone and be more aggressive with Blake. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
This isn't probably going to be a popular opinion but Olson is not a good playcaller. We need a new OC. I know people are worried about Blake learning a new offense again but he seems to have picked this one up quick enough.
The playcalling in the redzone at times this season has been atrocious. Olson is better than what we've had no doubt but he's still not good enough. This offense has immense potential with a more innovative OC.
I would do the exact opposite of whatever the playcall is.
I survived the Gus Bradley Error.

There seems to be a few issues down there.
- O-line simply has to be better. The Jags have had trouble converting short yardage plays this season. In the red zone, that problem is magnified. Obviously you can't just bull rush it up the middle every single time. But, there has to be positive running down there that can push for a couple yards and keep the run as a great option. - Also, watching SNF this week (Pats/Broncos), Collinsworth was talking about how it is much more difficult in the red zone for a younger QB (Osweiler sp?). The field is just very condensed, and it takes a while for a young QB to really get a good handle on red zone football. Idk how much that might apply to BB? But, at times it seems it still might be an issue for him (indecisiveness). -Play calling (this could fall on Bortles as well as the coaching). Bortles should have the ability to observe the defense and change into plays accordingly. Idk if coaching has limited him on that? But, when the coaching sends in a play that looks like the defense will be all over it , Bortles could change out of it. Anyway, as a previous poster said, set up a play where Bortles has the option of running. BB is excellent with his legs. That's a legit weapon to utilize down there. Call some bootlegs or something. The fade passes are not working. -But mostly, O-line. It has to get better.
I have said this several times but at goal and short to go I would spread five wide, put Bortles in shotgun, maybe motion a big WR in tight and run Bortles up the gut. He is 6'5" 250 and is uprisingly quick and nimble. They haven't attempted this once this year.
Otherwise, I agree with rolling Bortles out and letting him bootleg towards the corner and either throw it in there or run it. The problem is we did this twice this weekend and it was covered both times and Bortles made a mistake both times. The other thing I would do is the same thing as the GIF above: throw a quick slant middle of the field and let our big WRs and TE body and box out the smaller DBs. That being said, I disagree with Scarecrow, I think the playcalling has been really good this year, with the exception of in the redzone at times. I think they are scrambling to find plays that work because they have been so inept. I blame it on being such a young offense. Also, as I stated earlier, I like the bootleg calls in the redzone this week, they were just well-defensed. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

I agree we are improved. We were 32nd in PPG last year and we are 22nd this year and that is a nice improvement.
Oakland was 31st last year with Olson. They are 11th this year without him. That is a much better improvement. The offense got better when he left. The teams he's called plays for seem to struggle to score points; minus his first year as Rams OC. The Rams were 10th in PPG that season. The next year they were 28th. His first year with Tampa in 2009 they were 30th. They had been 20th the year prior. His 2nd year in Tampa they were 20th. In the 3rd and final year they were 27th. His two years in Oakland they were 24th and 31st. Points are what matters and he's not been good in that category. |
