It is often said that it's better to wait until the later rounds to draft a running back. And that is usually backed up by a list of successful running backs taken in later rounds.


Clearly it is possible to get good players in the later rounds - that is true of any position. But are your chances of picking a good one lower as you fall into the lower rounds?


I've been having a look for some statistical research and came up with this.

It's a bit old, but it does suggest you are more likely to get a good RB if you draft early.


Of course it might be different this year if there is a deep RB class, but I'd still feel more confident drafting one early rather than hoping to get lucky.

There have been lots of great backs taken early - there have been lots of great backs taken after the 2nd round and even undrafted. 

 

Here's something to consider:

People say "don't take a RB in the top ten unless he's Adrian Peterson-level." 

 

Well,  with AP,  the vikings got to the playoffs 4 times in 10 seasons and won one playoff game. One playoff win.  That's it. 

 

Still - if you are a GM that thinks Fournette or Cook are once in a generation talents - then you can make a case for taking them early. 

I'd rather wait.
