49ers and tacks obviously are vying for the number one pick next year.  Which is a better guarantee at securing it for you?  Gabbert or Mularkey?  I guess we'll find out.

The titans don't really need the #1 pick. The 49ers however....

Mularkey was kind of a curious choice, looking at the Titans' staff. He's a two-time failure as a head coach. It's pretty easy to guess that the reason they didn't go with Dick LeBeau is that he's the last surviving Union soldier from the Civil War, he doesn't really have much of a coaching career left. Going with Mularkey over Ray Horton doesn't make quite as much sense, given that Horton is a well-respected defensive coordinator who's been considered for head jobs before. The Titans currently have the league's 5th-ranked defense (although 14th in scoring), and unless the Titans really view Mularkey as a better prospect than Horton, the move just doesn't seem to make much sense.

Now that I think about it, though, it's possible that the Titans see Horton as a head coaching candidate for next season, and they don't want to see him destroyed as an interim HC. Or it could just be that the Tacks really think that Mularkey is better...which would kind of be what I'd expect from them.

It really is bizzaro world. When did the worst of our franchise history ever see another chance at resurrection?

The 49ers were doomed from the start when they basically told Adam Gase, "If you don't want Jim Tomsula on our staff, get out of here." They wanted Gase on the condition he would not fire Tomsula. I think that is why Colin Kaepernick has been bad this season. He was much better with Jim Harbaugh, a former quarterback who also improved Alex Smiths' performance, and now is being coached by an unqualified defensive guy who was just a position coach last year.

I'm just waiting for news that gene smith got hired on by some other dumpster fire of a team... Clots or lions sounds about right. Then the trinity of suck will be complete.

Detroit was Jacksonville North for several years. The Lions still have Don Carey and used to have Montell Owens - two players from the Gene Smith era. They also gave us a pick for Mike Thomas, one of Smith's draft picks. So it seemed like Smith helped the Lions instead of his own team.

Fun Fact:  All 4 non-interim head coaches of the Jaguars will be coaching this weekend.  Coughlin and his Giants face the Buccaneers.  Del Rio and his Raiders face the Steelers.  Mularkey and the Titans face the Saints.  And Gus Bradley and the Jaguars face the Jets.

I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

D6 told me a while back the Lions have a couple former Jaguars on their coaching staff. So if you want to count Dirk Koetter, there are more than four.

It would also be nice if Tennessee gives Mularkey the permanent job.

Not gonna happen unless he wins the division.
