There are only so many officials to go around. They can't suspend everyone who screws up that bad. The last time I read about a college replay official getting suspended was after the Oklahoma/Oregon game because of the recovery or a late onside kick. That was a Pacific 10 (not 12 yet) crew. Maybe if game officials were employed by the NCAA instead of each conference, there would be more accountability. But I don't see that happening.

if the conference has to come out and say, "ya the game should have been over" then Duke fans are left wondering why they got hosed so badly. They should just be given the win.

23 penalties on Miami seemed a little excessive. The officials should have been suspended for that alone.

I don't think it's a good idea to go back and award wins based off of a review. I believe florida was in a similar situation a couple years where the play clock expired before the snap on the last play of the game. The Kentucky game? Would you have been ok with them awarding UK the win? The play and the review were bull, but that's just part of the human element of the game.

Yeah, and not only that, Duke really had the lead because those same bad officials gave them the lead on bad calls.

the refs gifted Duke that last drive they had with all the penalties (including one really awful PI call on Artie Burns) and the fact that the QB didn't actually score.

 

there was no block in the backs and when the one player's knee was down, he didn't have control, which means it was a fumble.

 

anyway, there is no logical reason a team has 23 penalties called against them

The fumble thing you can argue that they maybe got correct, there were multiple blocks in the back, though.  

 

I have no dog in the fight and don't think they should change the outcome of the game, also there are missed calls every game all game, so just because it happened on the last play shouldn't matter.  

 

What really stumped me (and I didn't see it live so maybe I just don't have a good idea of what happened) was people made it sound like they threw a flag for block in the back, and then waived it off based on the replay, which a penalty can't be overturned by replay, so.....maybe that's not what happened though.

I disagree, but there was also the dude that ran onto the field without his helmet.  I know you're a Miami homer, but either way you spin it, the refs botched that play (and apparently other plays throughout the game) bigtime.

This call wasn't nearly as bad as the officials "giving" Ohio State a pass interference penalty on the last play of the game 2002/2003 BCS Title game against Miami. Oh well.. sorry to the 3 Duke football fans that have to suffer.... You win some... you lose some..... but you keep playing until the whistle blows... get over it...

the guy running on the field, as stated by the ACC office, would have resulted in a dead ball foul and the touchdown would have counted

Dear Hurricane Supporters:


What an incredible, exhilarating and hard fought victory on Saturday in Durham! The eight-lateral, touchdown play which won the game will forever be cemented in college football lore and in our storied history.


The fact that the ACC publicly acknowledged officiating errors on the play does not, in any way, take away our victory or our incredible spirit.


Some of you have emailed me this week, concerned about the wording of the ACC response as well as the seemingly endless noise about The U not deserving the win. I want to share briefly with you what has transpired since Saturday night.


Immediately after the game, I notified the conference office of my concerns regarding the officiating of our game. On Sunday morning, I had a conference call with ACC Commissioner John Swofford and some of his staff, to discuss not only the play in question, but my concerns regarding officiating throughout the game. Commissioner Swofford informed me that the league had determined that the officiating crew would be suspended for two weeks for officiating errors on the final play and that the conference would review the entire game film. Per ACC policy our football staff submitted the plays we believed were incorrectly called as a matter of weekly protocol, and were notified by the league that multiple incorrect calls impacting our team occurred during the game, including a pass interference call on the final drive.


I spoke again with Commissioner Swofford on Monday, to voice my concern on how this situation was being handled and the negative light it was creating for our institution. Rest assured, beginning just hours after our victory, the University was forceful yet respectful in our approach.


Earlier today we sent a formal letter to the conference office, summarizing and reiterating our concerns, and now consider this matter closed. We have moved on to UVA and I am sure that all Canes will be ready to cheer on Coach Scott and our football players on Saturday!

Always in the media's mouth? Unless we're talking about the Nevin Shapiro situation or many of the times Miami has gotten throttled in recent memory, you guys are barely a blip on the radar.

What everyone forgets or does not think about is the fact that Ohio State had to score on that drive. If the Buckeyes had not scored off the free first down, would anybody complain about it?

Please stop talking.  The game was over.  It was 4th down and it should have been Miami's ball and they were handed another set of downs.  It was bogus.

 

All of those referees should have had a criminal investigation into what they did that night.

Not worried in the slightest about Miami. You guys won't be able to lock down South Florida talent like you used to. Too many programs recruit it now. Better programs at that.


Besides, your administration will find a way to screw up this hire. Just like they did with Golden.
