Great Hope, Average Expectations Horrible results
|
The fans had great hope when the GM was fired and Dave Caldwell was hired & hired Head Coach Gus Bradley. The fan base has always wanted that Coughlin, JDR, and had hoped for Bill Cowher type of Defensive team but instead got Mularkey & Gus Bradley. The team's fan base was told by GM Dave Caldwell that they needed time to rebuild (and many thought that the team didn't need to be gutted as much as it was, some felt it was rebuilding to fit Gus's scheme but hoped that they both knew what they were doing). We kept the hope after only four wins in the first season, and kept the hope after even less the following year with three wins, because if nothing else they found their franchise QB in Blake Bortles. We all knew that Blake was going to struggle his rookie year and even a bit this year when Gus had announced that his OC let him down and they went with Olson. Oh during the offseason and preseason we were told how Lewis & Thomas were going to be on the field the most with tons of run plays & TE throws yet when the season started Thomas sat on the bench with injuries & Lewis mainly blocked due to Luke's horrible play.
We kept our GREAT Hope saying its simply bad luck due to injuries, but now the players are back healthy & still the team loses. Most fans had only AVERAGE expectations for this season, heck many fans expected an 8-8 or .500% winning season with simply a shot at maybe winning the AFC South as the HC had said that he had finally built the team that would own the AFC South this year and many to come... After week 6 we found out it is appearing to be horrible results of being 1-5, 0-2 in the AFC South. My thread wasn't meant to be another fire GM Dave Caldwell & HC Gus Bradley thread, no my thread is meant to discuss why I feel that both are in the hot seat. The main reason that the team lost this game and all five games this year, along with many in the last two seasons. The team has the worst defensive backs in the NFL. There I said it. I know many will disagree with me, and argue that McCray is the Jaguars best cornerback in the NFL, or they will hype up House, or Aaron Colvin or whomever Gus starts at CB they will find a way to justify why he is the best corner in the league, but when it truly gets down to it. When you look honest reality into it, the best corner is a backup (or was a backup on the Packers). He couldnt even get a starting job in GB but became the highest paid starting corner in Jacksonville and why is that? Because the Jaguars have the worst DBs in the NFL. They had to go out and get Sergio Brown & House and pay them a lot because the GM knew that the DBs stunk, but I guess wasn't aware enough of how bad the team truly is at DBs... I mean some of it is the DC having a bad game plan & playbook, but most of it is lacking DB talent. Sure McCray, Aaron Colvin, Gratz they all have potential but they wouldnt be starters on most of the other teams in the NFL. Discuss We show less advertisements to registered users. "It's built"
"It was Blake Bortles the whole time. They believe in this kid. He reminds me a bit of a young Ben Roethlisberger." ~Mike Mayock
I just don't know what it is.
Like I feel if Aaron Colvin was on a team like the Patriots or Steelers, he would be playing well and making plays, but here? Not even close and I don't know why. Probably coaching.
Shock the world
Quote:I just don't know what it is. It's hard to make plays when you're sitting in a zone all the time... I mean, it's just hard when your not playing man to man and blitzing or getting pressure on the QB. When the QB has time to pick apart a zone, sheesh, forget it. It's just to easy for an NFL QB. The team has been the worst at getting INTs for three years in a row, is that coaching by the HC, the DC Bob Babich, or the DB coach DeWayne Walker?
Or is it simply the DBs themselves in lack of talent? It has to be one of them...
A pass rush from the front 4 and LBs that can cover would help the DBs. Jags get zero pass rush from the front 4.
Also, House played pretty good in coverage in the first half.
In the second half, there was that ridiculous helmet catch---House was right there. It was a prefect pass and a lucky catch. That one dude's 1st TD was a blown coverage... So I guess you can put that one on house. The 2nd TD was offensive pass interference that wasn't called. So, I mean, it's easy to hate on House, but he actually played well, besides the first TD.

Okay so would you blame the DC or the HC for always being in a Cover 3 Zone Scheme almost every game for three years? Its the Defense scheme that Gus Bradley built in Seattle under Pete Carrol but he doesnt have the same talent, and the DC could change it couldn't he? Hard to figure out is that the DC or Gus's fault? The team isnt simply the worst at INTs they are the worst at PDs too! We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

I'd still like to see how our DBs perform when they don't have to cover the WRs for 5-6 seconds on almost every play.

You know... it can be more than just one of them. Sweet dreams!!! LOL, but seriously, I think it's a matter of coaching and scheming. It's not like there has been any defensive plays where the player's were in the right spot and the ball was thrown at them, at least not that I can think of off the top of my head. To me, it means we just are playing a soft base defense that is just too easy to pick apart. How can you really blame the players for such a terrible game plan?
Quote:Also, House played pretty good in coverage in the first half. To be fair to House he was playing injured, not making excuses for his poor play but just saying... House is the best corner on the team I dont think many would dispute that but Im simply saying he would be a back up on most teams or at least not the starting LCB. Quote:Last season the Jaguars were in the top 5 of sacks almost the entire season, and one of the teams that blitzed the least? We also were dead last in the league in QB pressures. We just happened to get sacks when we got pressure.
Quote:Okay so would you blame the DC or the HC for always being in a Cover 3 Zone Scheme almost every game for three years? I'd have to watch a Seattle game to figure it out... But to me, I find it hard to believe that Seattle just plays cover 3 and rushes 4 the vast majority of the game the way we do. But who knows, I could be wrong. If I am wrong, then I'm not sure what the heck is wrong with our D.
Quote:You know... it can be more than just one of them. Sweet dreams!!! Good point but do you blame the HC, the DC, or the DB coach for doing that? To me it would normally be the DC's fault but with Gus being a defensive Guru whom brought his zone 3 blitz type defensive scheme I can see him taking equal blame in it. If it is the playbook and not that the talent cant simply execute... you have to assume its the playbook because the HC already said the team is built that would own the AFC South so he already got the guys he wanted for his scheme so either they stink and cant excute and failed him or its his game plan...

But who knows, I could be wrong. I mean they have tons of different defense formations but the jist of both teams defense is to stop the run and force the pass... they play zone cover three with the Strong Safety being brought in on most plays to help stop the run. Look how Seattle played without Cam, so some of it could simply be that the DBs dont have the talent to execute Gus Bradley's scheme but if that is the case why didnt they draft or trade for a DBs or why say that the team is built? Or like most HCs or DCs why not change the game plan to the players strengths? We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!

It's funny how players that we let go seem to be so successful on other teams.
The problem is coaching. Poorly prepared players, bad play calls, stupid decisions.
Quote:Jedd Fisch was the OC and the offense had with a rookie QB and young receivers and bad OL I mean many failing franchises can have tons of excuses but great HCs find a way to win. I tend to group GM & HC together because its like a QB & WR they need to both be working good together or it'll simply fall apart. I am on the fence with GM Dave Caldwell he's done some moves that I think are good, but I am no longer on the fence with Gus Bradley after this game... He has to be fired. |
