Doug Marrone combine press conference

(This post was last modified: 03-01-2017, 07:12 PM by irontrooper83.)

Was interesting today, there's a video on the homepage and more quotes from O'Halloran and others on twitter.

Let's start with:

Ryan O'Halloran‏Account verificato @ryanohalloran 3 h3 ore fa

1. Marrone said #Jaguars want Myles Jack to be a "three-down," LB this year, but "he'll have to earn it."

More about Jack: How do you get Myles Jack on the field more?

“Put him on it?” Marrone answered.

“We need him to become a three-down player for us,” Marrone said. “There’s no doubt about it. Now, where do we put him in that thing? Those are things we’ll discuss when the players come back [when the offseason program begins in April].

“But I don’t disagree: we want him on the field.”

“If he continues to ascend the way he’s going … yes, we would like to get him on the field,” Marrone said. “But he has to earn that right to be on the field for three downs.”

2. Marrone pretty much said Gipson/Ramsey criticism of Wash after Indy game was in the past. But he didn't like it.

More on this and defensive scheme:

Ramsey and Gipson had been critical of how they were used at times last season. “It’s different,” Marrone said. “We’re changing some of the things we’re doing from a defensive standpoint. I don’t want to give the impression it’s a wholesale change; we’re changing a couple of things back there. … Is that a concern? Anytime a player is going to speak out about something and not come to the coach first … yeah, that’s a concern. Let’s make no bones about that. But moving forward, to me, what’s in the past is in the past.’’ …

6. Pointed out Bortles' breakdown in mechanics as reason for struggles last year. #Jaguars

-He spoke about the need for a better running game, better protection.

-He said working with Coughlin and Caldwell so far has been awesome. He shares the same view on the toughness part and explained part of the process in looking for tough players

-Doesn't rule out the return of Beachum saying he played admirably through injuries last season. (mentioned he also played Guard in pittsburgh)

-Said coordinators weren't kept for continuity but because he believed they were the best among candidates. Said he really liked Wash attention to detail, some things he did last year to tweak a bit the scheme and likes the ideas he has for improve and implement the defense next season.

-important that they build the scheme around players talent and not trying to stubbornly make the players fit or play a role just to avoid changing a predetermined scheme-concept.

-Said his connection with Oline coach Flaherty goes years and years back.

-He basically implied they want to improve the CB position in FA possibly: he was asked about Amukamara and he said they are letting him talk with other teams but are still in touch. He immediately added that they only won 3 games last year and they need to improve in every possible way (That's why I said he implied they are aiming at a better CB in FA).

It was really interesting to hear him discuss all things (even later with Oesher and JP Shadrick), i like the way he talks and his attitude so far.

It was obvious he is really enjoying the moment and the environment, he's really focused.

Those are pretty much the most important points, unfortunately there were still too many questions about Buffalo...there may be other stuff i left out on Mike Kaye, O'halloran articles or on jaguars.com videos but that's pretty much it.

I found Marrone's comments refreshing and genuine, no fluff! He does 'kind of' sound like Tom.

I liked what I heard and am hearing. But let's be real; it's all talk now. Until we actually see a difference on the field and wins, take it for what it is. But Marrone's conferences and tone is much more definitive that Cheerleader Bradley.
Let's Get Em!!!! Go Jags!

On topic of cornerback; I could see us making a move for Stephon Gilmore in FA.

I have trust issues, believing coaches! Gus ruin that for everybody... It's about show and tell for me now.I need to see the improvements to the team..I still remain optimistic about retaining Todd Wash, and Nathaniel Hackett as your coordinators, but obviously Marrone like or see something there then the casual fan like myself sees..

I'm curious about some of the things being changed on defense. Is there gonna be more blitzes, more zones, more man, or just the lingo is changes.. No more Otto, Leo, Big End crap!

I hope Marrone don't leave this team's success in Bortles hand! I hope he have a backup plan! I know one thing I can't wait to see it.

One thing that I forgot to add to the OP (I will edit it now) and that I really liked hearing is that he said they will really have to build the scheme around the talent of the players they have and not trying to stubbornly trying to make them fit in a pre-determined scheme.

That fits well with what he said about Jack: they need his talent and to have him on the field and will look for a place for him rather than confining him to a role that doesn't play to his strenghts (like last year at SAM).

I also liked how he addressed the Ramsey-Gipson comments, he handled that well: acknowledged something should have been different but still not pleased at their comments to the press but let's move on now and look ahead.

I'll give Dougie a chance without throwing any shade. But he better yank Bortles if he starts doing the same stuff.

In Coughlin you trust. Can't fail with him on board. Amirite?

But what if he leaves it in BOTH of his hands instead of just one?

Look, I've admittedly been all in from the start, and youve advised us against being so pro-Coughlin before we see how he runs things. While I think that's smart, I'd also recommend against lumping Tom Coughlin in the same category as Dave Caldwell and Gene Smith, whom I assume you're referencing with the "in I trust" statement. However;

In the Coughlin press conference thread, I made the comment (and to be honest, I was kinda serious) "when Tom speaks, you listen." You (wisely imo) told me to curb my enthusiasm, and to not base it solely on the individual running the show. I didn't get the chance to respond; I was 11 or so years old when it was Tom's town in 99, and I looked up to Tom as a football God, even as a youngster. At the time, I was too naive to realize Tom's in abilities as far as GM responsibilities are concerned. Not necessarily calling you old, but you were around and knew what was going on when Tom was blowing cash on FA's and busting on 1st round picks. In that light, I totally understand your want to wait and see before you crown Tom as Jaguar football God like Khan has seemed to do.

At the same time, I can't help but look at my 2 towels posted on my room in my mom's old house since 99 that say "you're the 12th man, be loud and proud -Tom Coughlin"....and not get absolute goose bumps at thinking about how awesome it would be if Tom Coughlin could return this clown show to the Tom Coughlin days of the 90s.

Hey, I'll admit it, I bought into both Gene Smith and Dave Caldwell 1000%, and I was wrong. I'm still 1000% comfortable and happy blindly buying into everything Tom Coughlin, and damn me if I'm wrong again. Idc, I'm stoked on Tom. I think he's on a mission, Jaguars luck be damned.

Keep in mind, it IS the pre draft season.

That means you should take any and everything with a grain of salt.

Worst to 1st. Curse Reversed!

This is supposed to be entertainment.

It's supposed to be. . Cheer for ur team and hope they win.

Me? I'm not curbing shizzle.

I'm 100% were gonna win the dman super bowl.lol.

At least I can have fun during the off season.

Who would want to call themselves a fan of the jags and not have fun?

A person who doesn't like to have fun.

It's not all doom and gloom.

Even though. . Our team really sucks lol.

We're just as good as the other 31 teams right now.

Let's have sum fun yeah?
