This is absolutely ridiculous. DeMarcus Ware just hit Alex Smith below the knees, a common roughing the passer penalty. Normally players don't get fined for that, which is simply a bad sack attempt, but Ware is losing $17,363 this week.

 

Making this fine even worse is the fact that Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright was only fined $10,000 for an unnecessary roughness penalty that got him ejected from the game. I saw both plays and Wright's foul, which involved an opponent's helmet, was much uglier.

I may be wrong, but I think it's based on a % of what the offending player is being paid per game along with the severity of offense.
