Inconsistent Receivers and the non-pursuit of options

#1

From PFT: Dallas will..."spend part of Tuesday working out players in hopes of finding one to provide that help. Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com reports that the team will bring in Hakeem Nicks, Nick Toon, Clyde Gates and Austin Pettis for workouts." How about our Jags, are we already good with our receivers?

I dont see how thats a better option than seeing if the 2nd year receivers can make a step forward throughout the year. Unless you believe game 1 was the ultimatum for them, and they should be cut now.

Interesting Hakeem Nicks hasn't been picked up. Dallas lost Dez Bryant for 6-8 weeks, of course they are looking for help.

It'd be great to see Lee on the field.

Oh dear, don't we have enough threads about how Robinson, Hurns and Lee are terrible?

I think this team could really use a veteran wide receiver, if they can get one for cheap. That said, I don't want a Reggie Wayne to come in here and knock one of our young guys down the depth chart and take a significant amount of reps away from him. But, I'll never forget an article I read years ago (and can apparently never find again despite looking many times) with Mike Thomas talking about the impact Torry Holt had on him in his rookie year. It spent some time talking about how Torry Holt set up a basketball hoop or something in the locker room and kept everyone loose and not overstressing the game. If you remember, Thomas was pretty good up until that contract extension (48 catches for 453 yards his rookie year for the most receptions from a rookie in franchise history, and then the next year he had 66 catches for 820 yards. Not HOF or #1 material, but pretty good for a #2/#3 at the time, before he got his extension and fell of a cliff.). I should also point out, Holt's one year on the team was the year Sims-Walker had 63 receptions for 869 yards and finally started to look like the receiver we all hoped he could be. I admittedly was down on Torry Holt that season because I thought he dropped too many passes, but there was an article that was basically just Mike Thomas praising him for keeping the locker room in good spirits and teaching the receivers how to handle the pressure and thrive in the NFL.

This team, and these inconsistent receivers especially, could really use some veteran leadership like that it looks like. I'd be all for bringing in a vet, especially if ARob's injury will keep him out for any period of time.

Rightfully so, there are many threads addressing how terrible our receivers have played. I also consider many of the minor injuries as a form of tanking. This thread is to address management's inaction to fill the obvious holes. Did they secretly reach the salary cap?

Sometimes I still get surprised by things said on this board.

He's old. It's not any more complex than that. Even if they get signed to a roster both he and Reggie Wayne are done.

Yep, over the hill. Once you lose the step, no matter what your actual age, you're over the hill.

We went after Cobb. He took less money to stay in Green Bay. We drafted two WRs high and are trying to develop them. Not sure what a lot of these retreads are gonna bring to the table at this time that is better than we have. Better to give a younger guy more experience to see how he performs so you can better assess the position. If we go another three or four games and still see the drops and mental errors we'll know to prioritize this position in the offseason. It's not like we have had a WR here since Jimmy Smith any way. Unless you qualify Blackmon's cup of coffee. We got all Viagra'ed over Cecil Shorts here for crying out loud.

Since the front office hasn't signed a veteran WR, signing one would be the wrong move and you bibbers just have an agenda.

Unless we do sign one, then it was the right move all along and you bibbers will be the first ones howling about how the young WRs had their spot taken.
