Arizona Cardinals hire woman to coach inside linebackers in training camp, preseason TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona Cardinals have hired Jen Welter to coach inside linebackers through their upcoming training camp and preseason. The Cardinals say Welter is believed to be the first woman to hold a coaching position of any kind in the NFL. Welter played running back and special teams in 2014 for the Texas Revolution of the Indoor Football League, becoming the first woman to hold a non-kicking position for a men's professional sports league. http://www.foxnews.com/sports/2015/07/28...latestnews ![]() We show less advertisements to registered users. She's got the experience. Interesting hire even if it is just for training camp.
Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
I can't speak to her knowledge of the game, but I remember when she was signed as a player in the IFL. It was nothing more than a publicity stunt as she was a 5'2'', 130lb RB.
If she can coach, she can coach. It'll be interesting to watch what happens with her.
I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Great job by Bruce Arians.
Knowing the type of straight shooter Arians is, I'm confident the opportunity he's giving Jen Welter is on merit.
It's a nice story.
But she will be the coaching equivalent of a workout player at mini-camp. A nice experience but no permanent employment opportunities.

Publicity.
Its no different from a special needs kid that takes a handoff while the defense misses tackles on the way to the endzone. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Quote:Publicity. Well that is one way to put it.
If it was another coach or another organisation I might be more convinced by the "publicity stunt" arguments. But Arians has worked too hard to make something of the Cardinals. I don't believe he would risk that with a worthless appointment.
Is it impossible to believe a woman is being hired because she knows something about the game ?
She's an INTERN. For the PRE-SEASON.
Whatever. And regardless of what I think of the appointment, you really think players won't have problems taking 'orders' from a woman? Sorry, I just don't see it working. ![]() Quote:She's an INTERN. For the PRE-SEASON. She won't be giving orders. She will be trying to figure out how to implement the orders from the linebackers coach. With her educational background, I don't think she'll have an issue reaching the players. I don't see where I ever said anything about her education or background. I'm talking about a woman trying to give pointers/coach/give orders...whatever the hell you want to call it...to a bunch of highly paid, testosterone filled, for the most part with big egos, men. It will be a problem, no matter how you want to twist it. ![]()
Brought her education up because it will help her to deal with the egos, narcissism, and whatever other issues that would block a player from doing their job and listening to a female coach.
Obviously there will be struggles, I am just saying she is as equipped as anyone to handle it from the perspective of getting through to the players and getting the players to accept her and her teachings.
If you say so. I do not see this being successful or going any further than pre-season.
![]() Quote:If you say so. I do not see this being successful or going any further than pre-season.It's a coaching internship, basically. It's not designed to last beyond training camp or result in an offer for full-time employment starting in week one. It's supposed to grant experience and exposure. Lots of coaches have gone through this program, and most of them don't end up as a pro position coach, but having "Assistant linebackers coach/intern for the Arizona Cardinals" on your resume will get you a few extra looks. So you're saying it's a pre-season internship? Boy. I wish I had said that. ![]()
Quote:So you're saying it's a pre-season internship? You really think professional athletes would have trouble listening to a grown woman? If she knows what she is talking about and proves it to the players (as with a male coach) I don' think it would be a problem. Besides that, I think if a player gets out of line they would be put in place quickly by the other players. I'm not a womanss advocate, but to demean her just because she's a female coach is pretty sad. |
