Texans extend Johnathan Joseph to a 2 year deal

#1

Quote:John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the deal is worth a total of $22 million with $11.5 million in guaranteed money. Joseph will make $7 million in base salary this year, down from $8.75 million and his cap hit drops by $500,000 from the former total of $12.25 million.

Joseph has spent the last four years in Houston and has started all of the 60 regular season games he’s played for the team over that period.

The Texans also signed Kareem Jackson to a four-year deal in March and drafted Kevin Johnson with the 16th overall pick, so they have the cornerback position squared away for the next few years

I was fully expecting for them to let Joseph walk after they drafted Kevin Johnson this year.

Surely that $22M is the value of the entire deal, existing years plus new, right? $11M per year for a 31-year-old corner is nuts.

Yes. Its essentially 7.3 mill per year now. 11 mill wouldn't be that outrageous though considering some recent deals FA CBs signed this year. Revis is making 14 mill per year as we speak. Byron Maxwell's new deal averages 10.5 mill.

Good deal for the Texans.  Really a bargain price for a CB leaving his prime.  He's definitely the best in the division.

Why? Nobody in Houston thought that.. Johnson is his future replacement, but he's still a rookie..at that position it's best to transition them in if you can afford to.

Vontae Davis begs to differ.

With NFL teams in Nickel/Dime packages about 70% of the time, having 3 corners is almost a must.
