Say Goodbye to the ZBS

#1

There have been murmurs of the team ditching the zone blocking scheme since Marrone and Olson were hired, and those reports are being confirmed by Oehser now.

Quote:12.The Jaguars will lean more toward a gap-blocking scheme than zone. This was something that was discussed more this week than early in OTAs, with Bradley saying the emphasis on gap-blocking has been accompanied by the offensive linemen adding bulk and size in the offseason. Offensive guard Zane Beadles[Image: icon-article-link.gif]also has widened his stance to transition to the adjustment. Look for less emphasis on the outside zone running game as the Jaguars make this transition.

The change should help in pass pro, according to Marrone. It will be good to implement both, per our backs seem more suited for the single cut downhill style

Woohoo! Gives me faith we can at least recognize a mistake and correct it!

The ZBS was a terrible idea with the type of running backs we had last year.

I do not view Toby as a zone read / one cut runner. Nor did I like the idea of him running outside stretch plays, which he did a lot last year.

Denard was not that savvy as a RB just yet, so trusting his vision/instincts as a RB seemed like a reach.

And whenever our players adjusted to the ZBS, something good was supposed to happen. Well i guess that was all crap.

Kind of like how fans were told that the Wildcat formation was great and wonderful, or that the run-n-shoot was great and wonderful. Things change, times change, and sometimes people are wrong. Better to admit the mistake and move on than cling to it in hopes of eventually proving everyone else wrong.

The entire intent of ZBS is to mitigate exposure/compensate for inferior overall talent on the OL.  As long as you have athletic OL that can move, you can get by with them even if they aren't road graders or terrific pass blockers.

Otherwise, if you do have talent at OL, you are more free to chalk up the play and expect every man to handle their assignment and beat the guys on the other side of the ball.

The added talent on the interior of the line will allow us to get back to that style of play.

You really don't understand the game of football at all, do you?

Everything is labeled "genius" if it works, meaning the personnel fit the scheme and it's successful.

If it doesn't work, the opposite happens.

A great example is the Eagles.  Going to be fun to watch.

When some people like me said that we are obviously moving towards a gap scheme, some people mocked that idea.

Signing a power player in Parnell, drafting a power guard in Cann, and hiring Doug Marrone. It all pointed towards this, yet some people like to put their heads in the sand and pretend that the last 2 years forcing a ZBS was a waste of time.

FWIW, both Dallas and SC ran ZBS last year.

Everyone runs it in some way, shape, of form.. But how often do they run it?

But Cann was widely considered a power guard as was Parnell.

You're just mad because you thought it was a good idea to begin with. Now that we switch back, this is also a good idea. Make up your mind.

Yes I do understand football. A touchdown is 6 points, so there.

It could have been with the right personnel.  Just because we sucked doesn't mean the scheme sucks.

Dallas runs it almost exclusively.

I tend to agree with Boselli (who knows something about it). Its much ado about nothing. Our problem was running Toby on a stretch over and over. Not the scheme in and of itself.

Yes. It's almost like everyone thinks coaches have a magic wand and when the players stink it's all because of how they were or weren't coached up. Or in this case schemed. Not to say coaches aren't important and good ones make a difference, but it's that whole "chicken salad outa chicken poo" dealio.
