Sacks are great. All I need is the eye test. Let him pass that and I will be satisfied. I really thought we should have gone offense because after the first 20 or so the offensive playmakers were few and far in between.

This was not a sexy pick for me. I'll go with the flow, but tape don't lie. He is a high motor guy that was able to expose or take advantage of weaker O-lines. Against Florida State he was man handled one on one. Yes those are some good tackles and as close to NFL caliber he had been up against. What really worries me is what seemed like a glaring issue after watching about 5 of his games...Run support. He was just not good at all, especially on the outside. He seemed to struggle making tackles in traffic. Personally, I don't expect much this season and don't believe he sees the field any more than Branch did his rookie year, if that. The learning curve may be high for this one. I look forward to him proving me wrong.
as long as he is more of an impact player than D. Harvey was...

I don't really care about the sack total. I just want to see some athletic impact plays from him as a rookie. I want to see him blow up the play the offense is trying to run at least once a game. I want to see him getting some hits in on Andrew Luck, and not the kind where Andrew says "great hit, man!" as he's getting up, I mean the kind of hit where he groans and asks someone to help him up.

If Fowler has a good career it won't matter, but this could be the pick that sends Caldwell packing if Leonard Williams or Amari Cooper have great rookie years and the Jaguars are wallowing in the 6-10 range again. I like a lot of what Caldwell has done, but I don't like needs based drafting and letting the better player slide to your opponents. JJ Watt isn't in every draft, but when JJ Watt is there you need to take him, not pass on him because you need a QB so you're going to take Gabbert.

I just want him to outproduce guys like Branch and Davis.  They're getting 6/7 sacks, so I think Dante should get a couple of more.  Maybe 8/9 sacks.

I expect Dante to have a developing type of rookie year, as he learns from Clemons, Branch and Davis.  I envision 5-7 sacks this year in a rotational role.  In his second season, I would hope major improvement and more playtime.

Caldwell didnt pick gabbert

Watt was not considered a home run, just a guy that was big and athletic

That's about right.   Rookies usually need a year to get their feet under them and understand how to train in the offseason.   How many sacks did JJ Watt have in his rookie year?   5.5
I really don't care how any sacks he gets.

There's going to be a lot more to his success than a number. He's going to develop into having a huge role in this defense. He's going to be asked to do a lot more than just rush the passer.
If he plays like Khalil Mack last year- ie makes himself the focal point of the offensive gameplan- I don't care how many he gets.
Numbers are arbitrary.

I want a guy who shows up early and stays late.  A guy who has the drive to get better aka the Payton Manning Syndrome.  A guy who is constantly in his coaches ear and takes coaching well.  A player who is putting time in with the film to learn players tendencies.  A player who wants to get better and make his teammates better.  If a player does all of these things he will play to his potential as stated in John Wooden's pyramid of competitive greatness.

I know about him not picking Gabbert, my point is take the better player, and he's getting paid millions to know who the better player is. Like I said, if Fowler is a good player then I don't mind passing on guys considered to be sure things, but if Fowler is closer to Derek Harvey than he is to Tony Brackens then that will be 2 out of 3 bad misses in the top three for Caldwell with Bortles still yet to show if he's a future elite.

I'm liking the draft, but you can't reach on need at the top of the draft. If Fowler is just "meh" and Williams or Cooper are "WOW" then Caldwell could feel some heat.
10.5 ish with a lot of TFL

Mayock was on Eisen's radio show a few minutes ago, and he thinks Fowler will have the most impact on defense of all the rookies.  He said he thinks he'll get 10-11 sacks his rookie season, and said 8 sacks minimum.

Gabbert WAS considered the better player in that draft at the time. Fowler is a consensus top 5 pick/best pass rusher and has been for months, Williams has a shoulder injury, not sure how you can say he was a reach at #3
I remember a piece Lageman did on Branch, comparing his technique to Robert Mathis of the Colts.  It showed how superior Mathis' instincts, and techniques were and how Branch was improving, but still would slip back into bad habits.  It was meant in a positive light, but definitely highlighted his areas of need.

The reason I mention that is Daunte is going to have a learning curve as well.  The good news is Daunte has great speed for his size and plays with his hair on fire.  He should be disruptive from Day 1, but not near as polished as he will be after a year or two under NFL coaching.

Give me 5

Quote:Ive heard guys at work say 8 to 10.

No way, with the 3rd overall I need to see something in the teens. So I will say 13.

At least double diggys
13 sacks seems reasonable. I also expect him to cure cancer, aids, and fix our economy.

But to be honest, just give me a handful of sacks/hurries/significant plays (forced fumbles, hurries on 3rd downs, etc.).
I honestly think 10 is a realistic goal. If he takes his place as starter. I know there is a lot of rotation, but this guy is drafted to be "the man" and though it is with the future in mind I still think with how much this guy was hyped up 10 is a realistic expectation.

Now, that isn't a hard 10... 8 sacks would have me feelin pretty good.

This is the guy I wanted all along. He's a guy I think could be and should be a force, even as a rookie.

A real shot at DROY.

More than 10 and we know we have something special... something like 5 or less is unacceptable.
