One.

In a critical game sealing situation.
I hope he makes an impact all over the field. Id love to se double digit sacks but I doubt he hits 8. Again I just want to see an impact one way or another.

If he doesn't cut andrew luck in half during a game move the team to london
When they drafted him I said 6 sacks. Somewhere in that area but like others said I'm looking for an immediate impact that might not translate to sacks. I just want him to pass the eye test.
Quote:I kinda get why teams do what Florida did with him, but I really have an issue with it. Running him up into gaps, fake blitzing him, different alignments on every play, I just don't get it. The guy is good. Let him put his hand in the dirt and get after the backfield. Move him around from Right to Left if you need to, that's cool, but why not just let him settle and do the thing that he is best at?

They used him like that at Florida because he couldn't shed blocks. If he lines up one on one he's blockable he creates havoc by using his speed in overload blitzes or getting a jump on the snap count. But if you line him up at DE and say beat the Tackle you're in trouble.
not sure if I know what a valid number would be to quantify him as a good pick. Mainly, I hope that he is someone who is so disruptive that the other teams have to game plan around him. He doesn't even have to have a huge number of sacks for this (though that would be good, too) but hurries, hits, causing fumbles, all lead toward disrupting a play. He needs to be such a presence on the field that opponent quarterbacks are thinking about him every time they take a snap.

Well that doesn't make me feel good.
Quote:Vegas has set the over/under on Fowler's sack total at 7.5.

That's about what I expect. I expect the team as a whole to improve in not only sack numbers, but pressures and qb hits. Hope Sen'Derrick is healthier earlier than expected. We have a lot of talent up front, a good rotation, and the potential for a great d-line

Gimme $50 on the Under. I'm good for it.
Thinking about it more. This is a defense where guys like Branch, Davis, Smith were getting sacks all over the place last year . I think Fowler, who will have more snaps and opportunities than them by far, could generate about 8 sacks. I think Bennett has a good shot at 5 or more sacks this year too depending on how much he plays.

What is the lightning package gonna look like? Clemons-Davis-Marks-Fowler? Maybe Bennett thrown in there at times?

From what I understand the LEO role is about mismatches and speed anyways. If we drafted him to play a traditional DE I'd be very worried but the LEO role he should be fine.

edit:

Clearly David Caldwell drafts and acquires talent for a specific scheme. On defense it's this Seattle hybrid defense where they want mismatches creating pressure, cover corners and hard hitting safeties. I don't think Fowler was the best player in the draft, I don't think Caldwell really believes he's the best player in the draft, he is however who they viewed as the best fit for the scheme we are running.

Same thing with the offense and the zone blocking scheme, we grabbed Beadles because of his experience in the zone blocking and have drafted linemen we believe will excel at the zone blocking scheme.

I'm not sure if it's a sound strategy to me we're limiting the type of players we are going after but I'll let it run its course this year and hope for the best.

I think they are actually moving away from ZBS.

while that is why they brought in Beadles... he might/probably be replaced by Cann
Quote:Man handled? He may not have had his best game, but was disruptive at times. If you notice at they were getting the ball out very quickly.

I think he had a very good game. I think at times he was handled one on one. more often than that he was drawing double teams and drawing holding calls. He had a few good hits on Winston and had impact 'invisible' plays during the interceptions.

All pass rushers and run stoppers get defeated every game. Dante's motor was on display against FSU and I think that will translate well. He impacted that game.

If the FSU game is his worst game, I'll take that any day.  He made some pretty good plays and never quit.

Didn't David and Gus say they like Cann because he's a versatile Guard that will fit the ZBS?

But as a LEO, he won't be used that way, right?
As long as Luck, whoever is in houston and Mariotta running for their lives im happy.

His versatility is playing either G position or C "in the future"

They emphasized moving to bigger Oline guys grabbing Cann, Parnell....

They intend to use both blocking schemes... but whereas last season was a ZBS tryout, I think this year is a phase out and next year it'll be mostly gap...

All that being said.. I think every team uses a little of both.

No as a LEO he should be fine, as a traditional DE he wouldn't do so well. He's not going to line up and beat the tackle play after play, they'll create packages to use his speed I imagine.
