Quote:With statements like the above it's like you want to have an empire. Bases everywhere makes us safe at home? That's one reason half the world hates us can't you see that? Fund alternate energy R&D, make actual alliances, stop toppling governments. It's like you don't understand this is a world much different from 30 years ago and refuse to move into the future until you are dragged there kicking and screaming.

The US actually has a pretty decent approval rating.  Especially considering that people even hate their own country at times.

Could have been more specific there. I understand not everyone hates us. Imagine how much higher our favorability "rating" would be should we not act like we do. That's what I was getting at.

Now look at how much we spent to get all those people to like us!

Those are tough numbers to swallow

Between 2003-2012 we spent 422 BILLION on foreign aid.

Absolutely bonkers. Is there a breakdown of how much was economic/military and how much was humanitarian aid like say for disasters and such? I'd be interested in that and would also wager it's a drop in the total bucket.

I don't know how accurate but that link above broke it down to military and civilian aid.

edit: they call it economic and military aid, I assume economic is more humanitarian aid.

Maybe... Either way military aid is the one that really pisses me off.
I wasn't even looking for anything when I stumbled on this

I think I'll stick to The Daily Show or John Oliver - you know, the real news.

Ditto. Today while news surfing..CNN and others talking about NATO jets running off Russian jets that were violating air space. Ok, that's of interest. Then switched to see what Fox was saying. They were on the serious subject of how Obama was trying to undermine Netenyahus election and how Obama lost the Israeli election. I was waiting for the criticism of what Michelle or the kids were wearing.

Get over it already.

Makes ME hate us.

Doh!
If anyone can substantiate this, but I can't. I read somewhere, this country had been at war 90 % of its existence.
Don't know my history enough to debunk or agree...but..here..

That is absolutely mind blowing. I'm ashamed to admit I did not know Vietnam was 20 years.

Yeah, be bailed out the French (was else is new) when they got their collective [BLEEP] kicked at Dien Bien Phu.

I know what I am reading up on this weekend.

Take that list with a grain of salt. If one shot is fired we're at war. Come on.

And no, Vietnam wasn't twenty years. Again, if you want to consider one US soldier setting foot somewhere as qualifying we're at war, then we are pretty much at war all the time. I mean, counting the Cold War as war? Really?

I'm not sure what the whole point of the list is.

That we are at war a whole lot. Even if some of it's debatable.

Welp. To paraphrase the big dog, it depends on what your definition of war is. Is it when there are casualties? Shots fired? Monies spent on military endeavors ? " The cold war" was a massive military build up of chess between to super powers. It was perhaps the best " war" the US won without firing a shot. But one can say this " war" led to other squirmishes. Proxy wars.

Either way, define it as you want, but one cannot say, we don't know war.

War, huh, what is it good for. Absolutely nothing. Song still relevant forever.
War?  Huh.  What is it good for?

Ending the systemic genocide of the jews, winning freedom from the British to begin a new democracy, and hastening the end of slavery.
