Think Red Bryant's run stuffing ability with upside to get 5 sacks next year..

Teams usually hit on half their free agent signings. Just about every team ends up with busts and so so signings. But I think we still come out ahead even if that happens. We are just that far down the ladder.

Like the J.Thomas splash

Still needed another splash, but many players were extended by their team.

Young players with upside adding to the competition. Potentially several new starters.

Add Murray to the mix and I'd bump it to a B

Wish we got Suh, Houston, or McCourty, though maybe we dodged a bullet with that Suh contract

We dodged a bullet with the Suh contract! Houston comes with an almost bigger price 2 1st rounders (so he's essentially not available). The Pats also weren't letting McCourty leave. Odrick is also a huge splash! I also don't understand the Skuta and Parnell hate. Skuta was a beast last year and Parnell was part of arguably the best O-Line in the NFL. C+ WoW! sorry we didn't trade for Tom Brady and Calvin Johnson, but hey teams are built by throwing 100 million dollar contracts at guys. A+ for the Jaggies, all the Colts did was bring in nobody younger than 31!

He has averaged four sacks per year with a better team. Is three more sacks per year worth $8.5M per year (minus Red's salary), assuming he even has the same production he did in Miami?

Looks like 17 people had crazy expectations as of this post. This has been a great FA period even if we don't top it off with Demarco, or anything else for that matter.

I tend to think it's about getting more production out of the (5 tech)  position by adding to the rotation. (while also adding a guy that can play 3 tech if Sen has any setbacks in rehab - versatility

Remember -  the 5 tech is manned by the guys most susceptible to being winded from too many snaps.

Obviously - it's possible they are ready to part with Red - who was an obvious stop-gap - but I think that's a less viable eventuality than adding a third 5 tech that can also move inside and be more effective than Alualu at either spot.

Good post. Odrick is a great signing and will help also with Marks for the first 2 months or so. Red will have to play his way on the roster. Don't forget about Hood. He may get cut big time. My Miami buddy while bragging about Suh had forgot he told me for 3 years he was one of the best DT in the NFL (Odrick)

By the way he is real nervous about Suh not signing yet.
Even if get Murray still would draft Gurley.

B this year, last year to me was a yawn.....nobody stood out, guess it helped us carryover to this year.

Nice to see some other team high ends wanting to come here rather than dreading to come here.

Bodes well for the future.

I think we're overpaying and taking some chances on backup players who could be starters here.   But I think we have no choice but to do that.   By rule, we have to spend to the salary cap floor (89% over 4 years ending in 2016).    If we don't do it this year, we'll be facing the same situation next year.

Operating under these assumptions:

1) We have to spend the money, by rule.

2) This is the best we can do with the money.  We employ a GM and a scouting dept to make these decisions.

3)  If these guys don't work out, we can cut them and re-create the lost cap space.

Therefore, we are doing the right thing by overpaying for these guys.  Everyone wanted to be aggressive in free agency,  Well,

This is what it means to be aggressive.

I couldn't care less about any criticism regarding the dollar amounts. The Jags have more money than they can spend and they HAVE to spend it. The money they spend this offseason will have any impact whatsoever on signing/re-signing anybody in the future .Football-wise, there's no difference in the Jags signing somebody for $10m or for the minimum. They're still going to finish the off-season with 20-30m in cap room again and have way too much money to spend next off-season.

C+ from me

J. Thomas TE-  a product of Broncos talented WRs allowed more opportunites for Thomas to get open under QB Peyton Manning combined with decent OLine.  That allowed him to be very successful the last two seasons but is he worth 9 mil a year on the Jaguars?  He might not be as prodcutive as last season with Bortles a bad oline and young receivers, either way this receiving TE a huge improvement over Lewis.  Does that mean Lewis will remain on the team, the Jaguars have the cap room to keep him and pose a two TE receiving mismatch formation for defenses.  Not to mention Thomas isnt good at blocking, so Lewis might remain for those reasons.  It meet a need, a big name (maybe over paid but heck they have the money) so an A+ for getting him.

Jermey Parnell RT-   A RT position isnt important enough to pay the man the way they did, but again they have the cap space and money to spend so why does it really matter it fit a need on the team?   He was the Cowboys back up but the Oline was filled with great talent (questions the demand for Murray because of that reason).  If he plays to expectation it will be a good signing either way still probably over paid for that reason an A-

Dan Skuta LB- Another backup player with a lot of potential like Jermey (above) again probably over paid.  I assume to play OTTO position or to add depth for Poz (injured last season torn Pec), but if Poz remains healthy along with Telvin on the other side a really good LB core if Skuta can play as good if not better than last season's performance.  A bit risky so a grade B-.

Davon House CB -  Again another backup player with potential maybe a mil a year over what he should make but the demand for the premium position forced the Jaguars to pay more in this instance.  Being a huge need (DBs) for the Jaguars I was suprised they didnt go with an even bigger name like Revis for example but I'll grade him with a B assuming he'll start right away.

Jared Odrick DE/DT- A good sign for depth if nothing else with Marks & Miller both being injured towards the end of the season he'll be able to fill in for Marks until he is healthy and then I assume compete for Millers spot as a starter.  I'll give this an A- for his age and skill set adding depth.

Sergio Brown FS- Another backup player as that appears to be the theme with GM Dave Caldwell's free agency picks, young backups with tons of potential (but the high pay is the risk vs reward part I guess instead of a prove it contract).  The other theme is a few of them are known for special teams play so hopefully that will improve in Jacksonville as well.  More modest grade of C- with this pickup.  FS is a huge need is Brown the best Caldwell could do to address that position or is simply a backup depth player for the team?

Based on the above grades the formula would be a high B grade for Free Agency so far.
Nice write-up DrewtheMathis ....

Thanks!

Sergio's 3 yrs 7 mil (3/9mil w/ playing time escalators) w/ only 1 mil guaranteed is actually my favorite contract. If Sergio's strong half season of snaps extrapolates to a strong full season of FS starts then it was a mega steal pickup. If not then we got a special teams monster on a reasonable deal at worst.
