Quote:Thomas and Odrick were good signings.  The rest are overpaid backups with a starting caliber prayer attached.

this reads as "i'm sour we didn't overspend on Suh"

We don't need all these guys to be starters, smh
Seriously, I would give them an A+ just for trying to get starters. Gene Smith would of signed maybe 1-2 backup quality FAs.

Jaguars football has really ruined my expectations the last decade.
Like I said, even if we don't get Demarco or anyone else we did fantastic. Demolished the rest of the league in spending. If you didn't give them an A or B you were just off your rocker with expectations cause what we got was awesome.

Love it a B from me. Sign Murray and they'll earn an A+.

If you're going to overspend anyway, then overspend on the 2nd best defensive player in the NFL, a guy who's got a great work ethic and is a favorite of teammates. The difference between Suh and Odrick is huge. The big concern is that by doing that you're risking it all on one injury; but Suh has been pretty durable so far.

I gave it a C. The Jags got a lot of useful players, but they had to spend the money in any case and I think it could have been better spent. In retrospect, I do like several of the signings, so I really should bump that up to a B.

If the Jags sign Murray, I'd drop that to a D.

Fire everybody.
I am still waiting by the phone with my Jaguars Jersey on, come on GM Dave Caldwell make the call.... put me in...

Quote:Meh too many backup players
I don't want to be negative but I have to agree with MVP. Parnell, Brown and House all came from established systems and benefit greatly as backups. They have to prove their worthiness here with the Jags. Julius Thomas is definitely an upgrade.
On Free/Parnell from a cowboy blog:

Quote:Free is assumed to be the better player. He was a leader on the field and in the locker room. But he is also the oldest of the linemen, and obviously had injury problems. Parnell is three years younger. According to Pro Football Focus, the two graded out almost identically at +8.5 for Free and +8.7 for Parnell.

Parnell and Linder may end up being our best linemen if PFF is remotely accurate on this particular grade.

Interesting. PFF is usually accurate on the OL.

Does anyone know what Beadles' PFF grade was in 2013?

I haven't seen that to be true.  They tend to be subjective.

Remember how Monroe's rating magically inflated when he became a Raven?

Ditto Pot Roast when he went to Denver.

Those players didn't get any better.  The guys around them were better.

As always, a grain of salt with their analysis.  I suspect there's a lot of observational bias.  Only, there's no telling how much and how prevalent.
Some people when grading this Free Agency:

How does Jabaal Sheard get a 2 year/$11 million deal after Skuta's contract? The money given out to Skuta is pretty ridiculous. Sheard would have been a better option IMO - has scheme versatility to play a lot of different roles, is three years younger, way more proven... It just doesn't add up.

2014: 1.9

2013: -1.0

2012: 12.5

2011: -15.9

He's been all over the map.

2010: -3.2

Sheard has a two year, Skuta's is for 5. The guaranteed money is significantly higher per year for Sheard. If Skuta busts, we are out for only a few million more than if his deal was like Sheard's. If he hits, we have him signed for a good while and don't have to renegotiate the year after we first got him.

Sheard got 5.5 mil guaranteed. I don't have the particulars on how much of Skuta's is guaranteed (or how much dead money there'd be on the cap if he was awful and lasted on or two years).

It's just a bit frustrating that the Pats can pull off these value deals for a proven player, but the Jags toss pretty big dollars at an under the radar player - a guy you'd think would sign a two year deal a week into free agency. Dan Skuta as a top of the market, first day signing? I'm not sold.
I would give Caldwell an A for effort and a solid B for results. McCourty would have made this an A+, but at least they went after him.I guess they weren't high enough on the top alternatives like Moore so they went for Brown. Really like Thomas and Odrick. Parnell and House are the two guys who will determine if the final grade is an A. Both appear to have their best football ahead of them and were available because their previous teams had so much talent at their positions.

The equal grades also came in 716 snaps for Free and only 388 for Parnell. Parnell dwarfed even Bulaga on a per snap basis (11.9 on 947 snaps for him)
I would grade this free agent haul as a C.

We severely overspent on players that weren't even starters on their previous teams (see Parnell, House, Skuta)

Our big acquisition comes with a big question mark (was Julius Thomas a product of Peyton Manning?)

The Jared Odrick signing wasn't too bad, but we spent way more than I believe he's worth.

Outside of signing Parnell, we still need to address the offensive line.  If we think Parnell will solve all of our problems we are in serious trouble next year.

I would also like to add another veteran WR to offset the inexperience at the position.  Bortles needs as many targets as possible to help him develop.

I am not going to pretend to know things I don't, so I cant say if these signings are good or not.  I will express my unqualified thoughts because that's what we do on this board. I gave us a c.  I understand that we need a big weapon for blake and Thomas was one of the top ones available.  I think he has had a great career thus far because of the qb throwing him the ball.  However Thomas is an improvement over anything we have and yes we overpaid, but I like the signing because blake isour future and he needs help.  my favorite signing is odrick. I think he will take the 5 tech and give us so much more than big red can.  plus I have read he is a leader so if we do release red hopefully he will step up into that leadership role. the parnell signing has me baffled.  I know that bulaga resigned with green bay but it was only 3 mill more over 5 years?  if we could have nabbed bulaga for say 5 yr 40 mill I would have given us a solid b grade.  and I know some people are going to say he is injury prone but he is still a level above parnell who was a backup swing tackle.  and he is also 3 years younger.  the other signings I dont know much about so I put faith in our gm.  the parnell signing is still confusing the hell out of me.  LOL
