This seems a bit much
I have no problem with the Jaguars overpaying to get guys. For starters, that's pretty much what it's going to take to get guys to come here over a perennial Playoff contender, and for another, the Jaguars have the cap space to do it.

Jaguars sign OLB Dan Skuta (5 years, $20.5 million): MILLEN Grade

Ladies and gentlemen, we have our first Millen grade of the 2015 NFL offseason. No one should be surprised though, as it wouldn't be an NFL free agency period if David Caldwell didn't wildly overspend on a mediocre player.

I wasn't even planning on doing a grade for this signing because I assumed the Jaguars obtained Dan Skuta for a 1-year, $2 million deal, or something of that nature. I almost choked on a brownie I was eating when I saw these numbers. A 5-year, $20.5 million contract for a career backup with just 5.5 sacks, two of which came against the beleaguered Rams on Monday Night Football this past season? What!?

This is truly embarrassing for Caldwell. He could've obtained Skuta for half this price, and he still would've spent too much. Skuta is a career backup and a special-teams ace. That's all he is, but Caldwell is paying him to be a starter. I suppose Caldwell watched Skuta intently in that aforementioned Monday Night Football contest and nothing else, given that was Skuta's only good game of the 2014 season. He was very mediocre otherwise, so I have no idea what Caldwell is thinking. I'm truly baffled by this.

From WalterFootball. Before last year I thought his FA grades where awful but he was pretty good with last years so it redeemed him a little for me. Hopefully Skuta can prove him wrong and he can go back to being an idiot again.

scheme fit?

I hope so Smile

Saw this too:

Dan Skuta, who has never been a starter in his career, is now the 6th highest paid 4-3 OLB in the NFL. Just wow.

Don't read Walter Football.

Your 'before last year' impression was right. It doesn't get worse than walter, both as an analyst or as a person.
Quote:Mason foster. He can play the same position and is better than Skuta. I understand FA, but these type of players were going for 1-2 mi last year, inflation is bad but this is a bit much. Much of the SF LB corp makes less than a million. We signed Dekota Watson for 1.5 just last year for the same otto position. There are good players out there, like Foster, I don't think Skuta is in his class.

This is what happens when the cap keeps going up.

And don't get enamored with the total contract amount. It's about guarantees.

I can imagine him eating lots of brownies.

I imagine Ben Stiller at the end of Dodgeball
Does everyone sign at 4pm? Or certain times for certain players?

That's when the signing can start. No set times.
Oh ok, thank you!
As mentioned numerous times above, they are possibly signing this guy twice what he is worth. Scouts saw something...

Rotoworld saying the Jags hoping they found a diamond in the rough

A lot of 49ers fans seem to really like him so he's obviously talented. Hopefully with him mainly being used as a backup early in his career his age shouldn't be a factor. This is a guy who is only 18 months younger than Posluzsny but has played much much less football.

guessing all these contracts will follow the beadles example front loaded over two years cuttable after that point

wouldn't expect to see much else from the jags beyond camp competition and dekota Watson style high reward pick ups unless we go after a free safety
Probably the only signing I have a problem with so far
I dunno. various sources are still talking Hardy, House, and Murray. I don't think Caldwell had slept in a week.

Quote:Let's see the contract first. Could be backloaded.

Even without seeing the contract it really doesn't look that bad. Its for 5 years, so it averages to $4M. Given that reported details are typically higher than the actual contract (after you factor in structure and what not), its very likely that this is essentially a two-year deal with much of the guarantee on the those years. Possibly a 3 year deal. I highly doubt it will be structured to be cap prohibitive in years 4-5.
