Gene Smith ruined that phrase for me.. Makes me wanna puke..
Quote:It's amazing how many people are upset that the Jags have made one big signing and a bunch of mid-tier guys. It's almost like they've forgotten how real-life free agency works.
Or maybe it's a case of exactly the opposite; that they in fact do know 'how it works' and so they aren't putting all their cookies into it. The goal is to build via the draft and only supplement via f/a. Still, given our season records the past few years I would be kind'a surprised if after 4:00pm Tuesday the Jags didn't make a splash in f/a this year. We won't really know who is going where until late Tuesday afternoon; until then, it's all talk from player agents and the talking heads.
GM Dave Caldwell seems to do pretty good with Free Agency I mean I felt Big Red Bryant performed well, Marks did fantastic, Clemons remained great, Toby Gerhart stunk but was it all his fault or was it the Oline & his injury?

I guess you cant bat for a .1000 so its a gamble that you will occasionally miss on...

what in the blue hell

it's like we are giving bigger contracts than necessary to questionable players just because we know we have to spend a certain amount.

You don't even know what the contract is. You may be surprised but the deal is likely going to be more like a 2 year, 6 million dollar deal with zero dead money the last two years. Just like Beadles and Gerhart and Bryant.
That salary is only what they COULD make.. They have to prove themselves to really get those figures though. You know, jump through the hoops..

its fine.  Dave obviously sees something in these guys with 'potential' like Parnell and Skuta.  I just find it odd that we didn't have to overpay for guys like Dekoda Watsom and Geno Hayes, but this year its like... you get a contract, you get a contract, everybody gets a contract!
The length of the deal is protection for the Jags. 4 AAV is a little steep (but still, really complaining about 4 mil/yr?), but if the expanded role works out and he is turns into the OTTO starter we will be thanking our lucky stars Dave had the foresight to go 5 years and not do some 2 yr/4 mil deal where he would be making a whole lot more than 4 mil or be playing elsewhere.

And if he doesn't work out I am sure almost all of the guaranteed money is in the first two years so it will be impossible for this to hurt us long term.

We have to start spending this money, or it will completely go to waste.   Rule says if we don't spend it by the end of next season, we have to give it out to the players on the roster.    And we have so much cap room to spend, it's going to be hard to spend it all.   So...  if they see a player they like, they are going to go get him.    Add to that, this is the 3rd year of this rebuild and they have to start showing some results.   So this is not a time to be cheap (or frugal or sensible if you want to call it that).

Once in a blue moon, even the ugly girl gets voted prom queen.. Now, whether we telepathically lock the doors and burn everyone alive with our mind, time will tell..
He is the 6th highest paid 4-3 OLB?

im not asking anybody to be cheap.  yes, spend it.... on the good players.  overpay for good players, not the average ones.

But right now, for us, average players represent a major upgrade at a lot of positions.

Like I said, this is the year they had to get aggressive with the payroll.
Sometimes you have to overspend for depth. If he's an upgrade and pans out, it was a great overpayment and well worth it.

Which means that by this time next year, he'll be the 12th highest paid 4-3 OLB.

If we don't get some players, then in 6 months people will be asking, "With all that cap room, we couldn't find anyone who could play this position?   This is the cheapest team in the league."

The salary cap went up a lot so the contracts are going to be bigger. And (might be taking a huge leap here), the team thinks Skuda is better than Watson.

but when people say that, they're not panning for guys like Dan Skuta.  They're talking about real proven talent.

maybe Skuta is great.  we cant see the future, but I cant make myself suddenly like him as a player because dave Caldwell 'sees something' in him.  that goes for any player.
