Quote:That can't be true or people would have stopped coming to Jags games a long time ago
Do you actually go to games? There are a lot of empty seats out there.
If it weren't for the Giants fans it would have been pretty sparse.
Do you live in Jacksonville? If so, you'd notice how little buzz there is about the team.

I will admit when the Giants made plays the cheering for them was oddly loud as if it was their home game. But then again, who can blame Jags ticket holders for trying to unload their tickets to opposing fans.

Of course there's no buzz about a 2-10 team. But people are still showing up. It's the NFL and there is always money to be made. No matter how bad you are, people are going to go to games because there is only 8 (or 7 in our case) to go to.

I don't think the Colts tanked on purpose because players won't do it, but I think the Colts did what the Sixers are doing now... That is to put out an inferior team and even if they play hard, they will still lose. It's why they stuck with Painter and some other turd instead of looking for a better option. They knew they were going to be bad, did nothing about it, and ultimately got Luck.
I don't think anybody thinks the players are not trying on the field. tanking comes from the top.

ya, it's becoming a little embarrassing every week when we are invaded. thankfully we actually won a game this past week.

I think Lamping just says if Jags fans don't want to come to the game then we are going to litter it with opposing team fans.

The team has been horrendous for four straight years. I can't blame anyone for not going.
If the raiders pick first
Jags second and Tampa pick third I don't think it will really matter
The jags and raiders are very unlikely to pick qb so all you need to do is trade above Tampa
If it's me I'm trading with the jags
As for tanking if I'm a GM and may never get a job again I'm not tanking without a guarantee iget to keep my job to reap the rewards
Didn't realize this would be such a heated topic. "Tanking" as in playing your younger player to see what you have. Taking a "Punt" on the season. Or "short term loss, equals long term gain". Taking the emotion out of the equation and just looking at the business side of it. If it means being a 10-6 team vs a 6-10 team in two years, then make the right business choice. The true fans, as painful as it's been, will always be there.

Yeah, Bill Polian wanted to change careers and work on ESPN anyway. Sheesh.

People dont understand this topic around here
But to answer your question, in the Jaguars case where they started with nothing, Yes. That is the correct strategy.
Other teams who rebuild that actually have some corner stones can do it much quicker without "tanking", but this obviously was not the case with this team.
It's just sad that year after year we have to talk about this.
Reality is that the Jaguars are seeing what they have for next year. Gratz, Colvin, Smith, Lee, Evans, etc. They need to find answers to whether or not we have legit starters (Lee/Colvin??), backups (Gratz/Evans?), players that they need to move on from (Lewis?).
I think we'll still see some major movement on the roster next year, but instead of cheap players I would expect the Jags to open the pocketbook and sign a few big-name players.
We really need some serious upgrades to the coaching staff...
Quote:If you think the Colts tanked for Luck, then please explain why Polian and Caldwell both got fired.
Polian got fired because of giving up on jughead too quickly. It's not just what I think, either; it has been speculated by better football minds than my own as well. I don't know that much about Caldwell except he's here now and seems to be doing a heck of a lot better job than any previous GM we've had... except perhaps Tom Coughlin.
I could be mistaking you about this, but you sound a little 'defensive' about the issue of tanking and the colts. Believe me, if the Jags had a chance for Andrew Luck, we would be crazy if we didn't tank to insure we got him. But instead, we facilitated the colts getting Luck by winning a truly pointless end of season game which, had we lost instead, could have put a wrinkle in the colts getting him. To put it bluntly, we screwed ourselves by 'winning' that game.
'Tanking' isn't an unsportsmanlike action, it's a maneuver that any good tactician uses. The colts are pretty much guaranteed to dominate the next ten to fifteen years of the AFC south because of 'sucking for Luck'. Too bad the Jags were too...
A. stupid
B. arrogant
...... to take action to prevent that when they had the opportunity. Now we get to sit in the colts dust for a long time... again.

So, you have no information regarding the Colts tanking, just mindless speculation. That's all we ever get regarding the subject.
Too bad the Jaguars didn't check with you first.

Losing games on purpose is cheating, and probably illegal, and would expose the involved team to a multitude of penalties and legal actions if they were caught.
I understand if a team wants to see younger players, or marginal players, for the purpose of evaluation, and are willing to take losses to do so. But that's not what we're talking about here. What we are talking about is losing on purpose with the goal of securing a high draft pick. If I was an owner, and I thought another team was doing this, I would be extremely angry about it, because it would damage the reputation of the league, probably irreparably, not to mention the fact that the team that finished with the #2 draft pick would have gotten screwed out of the #1 pick by cheating.
As far as the Colts losing games on purpose, so they can get the #1 pick, that would require the coach Jim Caldwell and probably Polian to be in on it, and the fact that they were both fired at the end of the season tells me they were not losing games on purpose.
Vince Lorbardi must roll over in his grave when people talk about tanking.
Vince- you play to win.
