Quote:I'm not seeing upside in Teddy, and that's the problem. In Teddy I see Chad Pennington type ceiling. Can be a decent game manager for a good team, but just lacks the NFL level physical ability to be a championship level quarterback.

Yep, Teddy has the ceiling of Alex Smith, he's not asked to do a lot on that Minnesota team.
Quote:Q: I know he is only a rookie, and I know he is playing for the Jaguars, but has Blake Bortles shown us ANYTHING this season that should lead us to believe he isn’t going to be a huge bust?

—Kevin, Long Island

Bill Simmons: The good news: You shouldn’t jump to conclusions with any rookie QB playing behind such an abysmal offensive line. The bad news: Bortles has tallied 15 picks, five fumbles and just eight passing TDs, along with an impossibly low 21.8 QBR. That’s really, really, really, really dreadful. Since 2006, only six qualifying QBs dipped under 25 QBR.

2013 Brandon Weeden: 24.7

2007 Kellen Clemens: 22.3

2011 Blaine Gabbert: 19.1

2006 Andrew Walter: 17.4

2009 JaMarcus Russell: 11.6

2010 Jimmy Clausen: 11.0

(That’s a murderer’s row. Literally — they murdered seasons. What a terrible omen for the Blake Bortles era. But hey, at least Sammy Watkins and Khalil Mack weren’t the next two 2014 draft picks after Bortles.)

What do they all have in common (including Blake)? Surrounded by an either really bad or very inexperienced supporting cast. Khalil Mack? He's making a huge difference on a 1-11 team that got blown out 52-0 yesterday.
Bortles just needs to "get by" for another 4 weeks. Hopefully they figure out how to protecr him.

Blake Bortles, QB: +0.8

Breakdown: Ending a string of red-graded games, Bortles posted his second overall positive on the year, though it was largely buoyed by his work as a runner. Taking off by design or in a scramble, the rookie QB picked up 69 yards on the ground, earning first downs with each of the four runs. Through the air, 17 of his 21 completions came within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage, though his throw of the day was the deep-shot touchdown to Marquise Lee discussed below.

Signature Play: 4Q 1:27, Bortles raced off left end for 20 yards to set up the game-winning field goal in the game’s final minutes.

QBR isn't a real stat. Its some mindless ESPN rubbish. No way as Bottles been as bad as that lot. I remember Andrew Walter had the worst oline play I've ever seen so maybe sacks come into the stat which is silly.

QBR is actually the best way to evaluate a QB. It's takes into account a ton of different QB aspects and not just completion % tds yards and interceptions.

It takes into account clutch drives, garbage time stats when the defense doesn't care, 3rd completions etc.

For example QBR has Ryan Fitzpatrick at 19 while QB rating is at 9..... Pretty big difference.

If you can't see that Bortles is highly likely to be a much better QB than those on that list, then you should reconsider how you watch football.

Take the stat for whatever it's worth, but it doesn't illustrate the potential in this particular rookie.

No it is utter rubbish. Just because it takes into account lots of things which are barely quantifiable doesn't make it a good stat.

How do you quantify the defence not caring? People were saying the Jags D had stopped caring in the 1st half on sunday.Stats in team sports aren't ideal as it is, adding a ton of subjectivity into the variables makes it even more useless.

Not sure how you took what I said and turned it into something about Blake but ok.

I like Blake and think he will be better next season. All I was saying was that QBR is a good stat.

Sorry. That was just the context of the post that initially brought the ESPN stat into the thread.

When you called it "the best way to evaluate a QB" it sure sounded like you agreed with the assertions comparing those bust QBs with Bortles.

For all of the stuff their algorithm includes, it certainly left out some things that give us faith in the kid right now. You said it accounts for "clutch?"

34.4 seems pretty low for a QB that converted with his feet and his arm in different clutch moments Sunday. I think the stat is rather suspect, but I'm glad you think he'll improve despite it.

Total QBR might be the single dumbest stat that ever existed.

His old-style QB rating is 72.2. The rating converts pretty well to a letter grade, in this case a C-.

As an amusing side note, 8 of the 27 QBs with lower ratings this year are named "Matt."

Quote:2. Blake Bortles is a bit enigmatic, but as soon as Jacksonville gets its offensive line sorted out, we think he'll be a fantastic player. His decision-making down the stretch, especially on a read-option keep that set the Jaguars up for the game-winning field goal, was impressive. He also placed a ball perfectly to Marqise Lee earlier in the drive. He and Lee hooked up for a beautiful 30-yard touchdown earlier in the game.

No stats never mean nothing when they're against the people on hour favorite team. Only when they help them.
Dont know if it was a breakout game but im proud of the young man.
