Thats a name I have not heard in a long time.  Thanks for the reminder
Quote:I think you're being too harsh on his drafts.. I just looked at them - and he had plenty of decent picks in mid to lower rounds.

maybe you don't remember those early days in jaguars history?

95 - boselli, stewart came in the 1st round.

chris hudson was a very solid pick that played good football for a few years for us.   if you're going to give caldwell a plus for a guy like aaron colvin - you have to give coughlin credit for hudson.

rob johnson... developed and traded him away and got a 1st round pick in return, which netted us fred taylor

96

very good draft.. Kevin Hardy, Tony Brackens, Beasley.

Cheever was a good player for a very short time, but injuries cut his career short.  was still a good pick.

reggie barlow also had a pretty decent career for us for a while.  nothing spectacular - but he contributed.  similar to rashad greene (mostly a return guy)

97

mike logan was solid - could've kept him - instead he played a number of years for the steelers

seth payne was rock solid

daimon jones was a nice redzone threat

daimon shelton was our lead blocker for a number of years, solid pick.

again - not pro-bowl guys but very solid picks that contributed to playoff teams.

98

tavian banks was amazing - but injuries cut his career short

john wade - solid player that enjoyed a long career in the NFL

99

probably his weakest draft - but jason craft was a solid player for us for a while.  poor draft overall

2000

brad meester

TJ Slaughter (one of my favorite players at that time)

Danny Clark

Rob Meier (one of the best value picks)

2001

Mo Williams

Marlon McCree

2002

Akin Ayodele

David Gerrard

I submit that coughlins rounds 2-7 will stack up very nicely compared to most GMs in the league, including Dave Caldwell.
Hudson absolutely sucked.  He was small, did not have good range, was a speed bump against the run, and made what Coughlin referred to as the dumbest play in football in the playoff game against the Jets when he lateraled a pick and it wound up going back to the Jets.  He does not compare favorably in ANY way to Colvin.

In fairness to TC, I think Cheever would have been a great C, but sadly due to injury, he only gave us maybe 5-6 games.  But like Steve Emtman, he goes down as an injury bust.

Was not a big fan of Logan.  Can't recall a single big play he made, and never cracked the starting lineup for any appreciable length of time.  Were he any good, there would have been no need to sign Carnell lake.

Keep in mind TC's misses.

He whiffed on Brian Demarco and Bryan Schwartz

In the first round, he chose Renaldo Wynn over Trevor Pryce.  Logan wasn't that good, and Hamilton was a complete disaster that same draft.

His initial target in 1998 was Curtis Enis over FT.

He chose R Jay Soward over Keith Bulluck.

TC had some decent players, but had more than his share of misses too.
Quote:TC blocked Donnie Henderson who he had an issue with when they were on the same staff. Also Henderson was our DB coach in 2008 and he was very meh and known for being a yeller which can alienate players. Blocking him allowed us to get Perry Fewell for the role instead which is a much better hire IMO so alls well that ends well. I wouldn't be concerned with TC, at least not yet, he seems to know what hes doing thus far.
And I'm all good with the Fewell hiring, but Coughlin and Henderson had a disagreement during a scrimmage in 2005.. Nearly 12 years ago. That's a long time to still be upset and stubborn about a difference of opinion as far as football goes.

If Henderson went after Coughlin's family in that blow up in 2005, that's one thing and I can understand still holding some sort of a grudge. I highly doubt that's anything close to the case though.

Still holding something over somebody's head that happened nearly 12 years ago, just doesn't sit well with me. It just seems odd and very stubborn imo.

Again I'm good with the Fewell signing and how that played out.

How do we know that Coughlin blocked the signing purely because of the dispute? I'd say its more likely that he blocked Henderson from signing because he thought Perry Fewell was a better option.

We don't truly know either way, but I'm going by what was reported.

All that was reported was that Donnie Henderson was blocked from signing by Coughlin. I tend to think that's simply because Coughlin wanted to hire Perry Fewell rather than simply because he holds grudges.

Blocked from signing because of a blow up they had during a scrimmage in 05. That's exactly what was reported.

I hope it's because he wanted somebody better and not because of some old stupid disagreement they had back in 05.
This year's draft

Caldwell: I like hooker I think he should be the pick.

Coughlin: Hooker is a great player, but I think Allen would be a better pick here.

Caldwell: Yeah I agree. Allen it is.

All have seen is that he was blocked from signing. The articles mention the incident but don't say if that was the deciding factor.

The fact that Perry Fewell was signed would say that it was simply Coughlin had a better man for the job and someone who he trusts too.
Let Poz go. Move Jack to MLB. Sign Jamie Collins.

Telvin-Jack-Collins

Looking back, at the risk of immodesty, I have to say not bad.
I concur.

I DID miss on seeing an acquisition of Calais Campbell, especially on the basis of the smaller DE hypothesis, but I am inclined to see that as an aberration (the signing, not the miss).

I DID see Robinson as a potential target, but at that stage, I couldn't imagine him falling all the way to the 2nd round.

I'm glad we took Fournette at 4 and wound up with Robinson. I'm also glad Alualu and Odrick are gone.

Unstated in this thread is I was all but certain we'd draft another TE, especially considering we traded Julius Thomas, and I did not envision a trade for Branden Albert.
