<p style="font-size:16px;">Jaguars coach Doug Marrone says he's still working to put staff together. I heard Tom Coughlin has final say in each decision

Am I the only one worried about TC possibly overplaying his hand and alienating Marrone?

I hope it doesn't reach that point and both guys are generally of the same mind on the staff they want to bring in.

Nope I kind of feel the same way.

It was well known Tom wanted to be the HC of the Jags. When he was denied that position, he decided to take this current role in the organization.

I'm kind of getting the feeling that he's a little bitter about not getting the HC job and that he might be trying to wear every cap in the building. My opinion though and I truly hope that's not the case at all.

I understand that somebody who has more a little more power, can make some of those decisions that Tom is making. However, if he continues to over rule Marrone and makes Marrone constantly go in a different direction, it could absolutely cause tension and issues in the organization. It's one thing to do it once, or twice, but if it becomes a thing with Coughlin, it will get old very fast for those involved on the inside.

Maybe Coughlin is low key trying to push Marrone out the door so he can take over? I highly doubt that's the case, but only time will tell.

I can say this though. If Tom keeps over ruling Marrone's coaching choices and decides to basically picks his own staff, he better have instant success this year. Because it will be on him and his hand picked coaching staff, if we have another bad year.

I personally hope I'm just reading into this way too much and that it's just all fluff though. I hope they will all happily see eye to eye and agree on the coaching staff. I hope they will all work together as one unit, in perfect alignment.
Quote:You make a lot of good points. I think that the upset comes from the fact that a majority of the fan base is dumb. That's not a knock against the Jags fan base, football fans in general are pretty dumb. They can't see past the surface of things to understand that there are different parts that make up the whole. Smart fans like you and I (and three or four other on the forum) know better which is why we know not to write off Marrone out of hand. And of course Coughlin will have something to say with what goes on at field level too. Keep the faith bro!

To call most of the fan base dumb because a difference in opinions,is idiotic.. Even Bullseye can respect the opinions of others without insulting them... The only thing dumb that majority of us fans are doing, is supporting a team that has been losing for years... Spending their hard earned money on season tickets, parking,That expensive [BLEEP] beer and food... Only to be let down game in game out.. Year in, Year out..

So before you insult the 70 percent of us, check your damn self. Straight up! People tired of Losing and want a serious change.. Not no experimental coach, or some experimental coordinators.. People want proven, and you should respect them for that.. Smartty..

you got a little sensitive on that last post

Nahhh.. lol.. I mean to call 70% of fans that oppose the Marrone hire dumb, is dumb in itself.. people need to learn to respect people's opinion, even if it's contrary to their owns.

i agree with you but we both know how irrational and insensitive some of the posters are with their words so it's up to you to be above their ignorance my good friend.

Thank you and the words of wisdom this morning was on the house. lol.

<div>The problem is... Marrone seems to want to keep most of the old staff.  Which means very little change.  He seems to want to keep Hackett and the defensive staff.  I guess we might get lucky and he bring in a good QB Coach to help Bortles out during the regular season.  Just seems like very little change for a team that went 3-13.  And as bad as Gus was, the coaching couldn't have been ALL on him.  Yet we're likely to see little change in that regard.   And yeah, change for the sake of change isn't necessarily the best thing--but we've had four years of losing.  Keeping most of the same staff seems out of place for a team that hasn't been to the playoffs since before President Obama was elected--and he's since served two terms.  If Marrone was a guy they had in mind to replace Gus--why not fire Gus earlier to give Marrone an extended tryout?  Why wait until the last two games of the season, against divisional opponents?  I mean surely if Gus were truly the only problem on the staff.... then why not fire him earlier?  Is the organization really okay with Marrone going "Yeah, I think I'll just keep the staff we've got."

As for his stint in Buffalo--much can be attributed to Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz.  Look at how he turned Philly's defense around.  Buffalos defense got turned around--and that's why they had their first winning season in several years.  Now one might credit Marrone with hiring Schwartz--but again it looks as if he'll be keeping Wash on.

You also have the fact that it's rare for an interim head coach to have success. The most successful ones were probably Marv Levy, Marty Schottenheimer (Never won a playoff game with the Chargers), Jason Garrett (has yet to win a playoff game, but that might change Sunday) Jeff Fisher, and Raymond Berry.

It's hard for me to be optimistic about this hiring.  It feels more like a Romeo Crenell than it does a Jason Garrett or even a Jeff Fisher.  I really hope I'm wrong--but I don't think Marrone is going to turn this team around.

I know it's still quite early, and yes, he retained Wash and Hackett, but everyone else on the coaching staff was dumped.  Special teams coach got a huge upgrade in Joe DeCamillis.  Had TC enabled him to hire who he wanted to hire, the secondary coach would have been upgraded, too.

Schottenheimer was also an interim coach in Cleveland, where he started.  He won playoff games there.
BrklynJag...

Just over a year ago you had this to say about Marrone.

I don't understand why this guy is getting so many interviews. I guess teams are just being overly thorough.

Because he's a good coach, thats why. Alot better than our current one</blockquote>

What changed?  Why were you so certain he was a huge upgrade a year ago, but less than enthused once he was named coach this year?

He will backpedal as per usual.

I dunno.  I could see two, maybe three legit reasons why he might change his mind,  But I am curious what caused the change.

Also...credit to FBT for predicting Marrone would become the team's interim coach.

Didn't everyone predict that? Lol

I dunno...I guess on some level at some point.

But FBT did it about a year ago.

I was a bit hasty in giving FBT kudos.

I glimpsed at his post in the thread and thought he made the prediction a year ago.

Having re-read it, it wasn't quite what he was doing.

haha yeah people were predicting that as soon as marrone was hired.

also while we were searching for our new HC. FBT actually said the only reason we would hire Marrone is if no one else wanted the job. so........ he doesnt really know what hes talking about at all. pretty much just like the rest of us.

The assumption you make is that no one really has a dumb opinion, opinions that are in opposition are just "different".  Don't buy it anymore.  At a certain point people are just being downright silly.  At least give the current decision makers a chance to make a difference before pronouncing it a failure and heading to the Modis Building to end it all.

He never really makes definitive statements so that way he can never be wrong.

He was all about Gus and the "just get better" mantra. I liked Gus but I've always hated the "JGB".

I liked the "just get better" thing our first two years. With an awful+young squad I thought it was a good idea to keep things on track. Problem was in year 3+4 when the wins were there but there was no urgency to reach out and grab it.
