Quote:Personally, I'd like to see him struggle, just so we can get a sense for how he responds to adversity.
This...but I don't necessarily want to see him "struggle" as in have a bad game...though it would be good to see how he bounces back, especially if it's just preseason.
I don't think he's been blitzed very much in the first two preseason games, but I believe he'll be blitzed heavily, especially in the first five games.
I want to see how he handles a heavier dose of blitzing.
Ideally, he'd beat the blitzes enough to dissuade teams from from blitzing later on.

I read (or heard via ESPN radio interview) somewhere that in college, especially last year Bortles graded out very well vs the blitz. He was very accurate and productive vs the blitz one of the higher rated QB's from this draft class regarding that metric.

I clarified in another post. I want to see how he reacts after a mistake, because they're going to happen. Even the best in the business throw picks or make boneheaded plays. How they respond to that is the difference between the good and the bad.

Here's the report.

Though undoubtedly he will face a bigger variety of blitzes from superior athletes, combined with far more exotic coverages than he would find in college, I hope that is indicative of how he will hold up against the blitz in the NFL.

Personally, I think we got a good one with Bortles. I also think the approach they've taken in bringing him along will ultimately benefit him and this team in the long run.

If the Lions pre-season game at Oakland last week is any indicator, Blake Bortles will be seeing LB blitzes/ dogs between the Guards early and often. The Lions had problems generating a pass rush with a 4 man front but when LB's Stephen Tulloch and DeAndre Levy came up the middle, especially on the same play, Matt Schaub took a beating. I'm sure Gus Bradley and his Offensive Staff have spent considerable time this week preparing for a heavy doze of blitzes. Knowing the Ravens coaching background of Lions new Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin, the blitzes can come in many different forms. This will be a good test for both teams.

Granted, I think Bortles will show more mobility than Schaub, and I would expect to see them deploying a lot of plays that have him moving the pocket.

The only good thing about Henne starting the first quarter is that it will give Bortles a chance to see the Lions defense and how they operate before having to face them head on.

Actually Bridgewater graded out slightly better vs the blitz but Bortles was 2nd, so not too shabby.
What jumps out on that chart is the disparity for Carr on "pressure vs non pressure"....that guy will bust in the NFL.
Bortles did grade out tops in 20+ yard accuracy. Good to see.

The last thing you want is for a young QB make an early mistake, lose confidence and let it snowball, and he becomes 2013 Matt Schaub v.2.0.
I don't think that would happen to Bortles, but it would be nice to get some confirmation.

Quote:Agreed. What I've noticed about Bortles in the brief time he's been here is that his demeanor doesn't lend itself to being permanently scarred. Still, I don't want to see him taking a serious beating because the line isn't playing up to snuff.

I fully expect to see him rebound if/when he faces adversity in the same manner that more highly regarded QBs do in similar situations.

Quote:Lewis is going to be an integral part of the offense this year. I'm not sure why people have this determination that he should be sent packing. If it's his contract, are you writing the check? If he has a strong year statistically this season, will it silence the critics? Probably not.My only complaint against Lewis isn't his own doing...his contract. I think the drops are blown way out of proportion as he's pretty much middle of the pack in that category. I think the uncovered drop in the end zone contributes to this. I think he's had a good preseason so far and I also think he's going to play a much bigger part in the offense. Will it be enough to get him the same kind of contract? Probably not. I think they finally started using him better in the red zone the second half of last year. I don't know why it took them so long to throw the ball up for grabs to a 6'6" receiver. We'll see what happens. I think he's better than a lot of people give him credit for. Although, unless he's willing to take less money, this could very well be his last year.

Yes.
The Lions are running a 4-3 again this year, aren't they?
I think a lot of blitzing between the interior three would be a very good test for the Jaguars, not only for Bortles but for our interior 3.
The only thing that would be better from a preseason prep perspective would be if the Lions were running a 3-4, because at least our first SEVEN (7) opponents are running 3-4 defenses.

Matt Schaub looks like he's much closer to the end of his career than the beginning. Hence, I certainly agree that Blake Bortles will display more mobility.
In addition to what you mentioned regarding plays that move the pocket, I expect to see plenty of screens and draws if the blitzes come regularly. This will be good for the Jaguars in many ways, including preparing their timing on these plays. With the Eagles likely going to throw the kitchen sink at the Jaguars, based on their history, this pre-season game should provide key preparation.

Sounds like a good test for Bortles (and the blockers) then....

While the Lions base Defense is a 4-3, a major part of the overall scheme is the new ' flamethrower' position which rookie LB Kyle Van Noy is eventually expected to be the key component. In essence, Van Noy would be lined up on the outside, in either a 4 or 5 man front. The Lions have used this package to some degree in the pre-season but Van Noy still has plenty of learning ahead despite showing major flashes. Van Noy was drafted by the Lions because of his versatile all around playmaking skills.
