The floor and starting point are not the same thing
Quote:This is or will likely be the floor or (starting point) for Short's agent regarding his new deal.
You keep moving the floor as you scramble to find other receivers with bigger contracts.

There's no way of knowing today what Shorts is going to be asking for.
Quote:Golden Tate got 5 yr/30 million and has similar stats.
Valid argument.
Quote:shorts also isnt going to be brought to another team to be a "#1" guy.

eric decker got paid number 1 money and is expected to be their number 1 receiver.

Eric Decker didn't get paid WR1 money.

Look at the contracts Calvin Johnson/ Larry Fitz/ Brandon Marshall get. Thats WR1 money.

Decker got overpaid, yes, but its not WR1 money. He's not a WR1 and the Jets will soon find that out.
Quote:If the receivers are putting up inflated numbers, I'd call that a good thing. If it means paying for that increased production to keep the continuity on the offense, I'm sure Khan will have little issue in doing so.

Quote:Not scary, more like good. It artificially inflates Short's trade value. Or at the very least inflates the compensatory pick value if we let him walk because he's going to command too much cash per his actual talent.

If Bortles is making Shorts look that good, he's going to also be making Lee/ Robinson/ Hurns look good also, and they're all a higher ceiling than Shorts.

No, it's not a good thing.

I suspect Caldwell is too smart to throw a ton of money at anyone when it's clearly the QB driving the success, but not every team is smart enough to follow New England's lead on that front.

Shorts is a good player, but if he's making Golden Tate money it should be with another team.
Quote:The floor and starting point are not the same thing

Ok, well then the floor. THe absolute lowest amount the agent will be settling for.

We can add contract negotiations to your long list of attributes.

Why isn't it a good thing?

If you just said that Caldwell is too smart to be duped, other teams/ GM might not be.....so either, the Jags will be able to capitalize off this via inflated trade values or via letting WR like Shorts (or similar) walk as an UFA and then benefiting from other teams overpaying on that contract which helps to land Jax higher compensatory selections.

If there is a WR worth keeping (i.e. legit WR1 type), I think Caldwell will be smart enough to decipher.

You're right.  It's terrible that the dilemma this team could face is that our receivers are doing so well that they will command more money.  What a horrible thing that is.

I'm fairly certain Caldwell is aware of what is necessary to assure the team remains cap healthy while continuing to move in the right direction.

It's a bad thing if we have to watch Shorts walk because he's getting offered a contract that is inflated over his worth.

Now I do think it's great that Bortles looks like he'll create that kind of problem, but I'd rather not have our receivers constantly heading out the door after their first contract, either.

Again, why is that bad?

If Bortles is making Shorts look better than his numbers, then why wouldn't the same thing carry over to other WR's as well? LOL, what you think it will stop at Shorts and thats it??

Shorts isn't the kind of player that is a must keep anyway.

He's not Calvin Johnson/ AJ Green/ DeMaryius Thomas/ et al.

He's a nice cog type. Thats about it.

calvin johnson / larry fitz etc get paid more than normal WR1 money.

I agree, he is just a good player, not a great one. I just don't like the idea of all of our WRs leaving after their first contract. Still it's a better problem to have than Henne at QB.

The goal should be to have a front office good enough to replace those receivers who do leave with guys who are equally talented and capable of back filling those positions.  The team will spend where they need to in order to retain talent.

Yes, this ^^^

Thats how the best FO usually operate and maintain a long term healthy salary cap and success.

They only keep the MUST keep talents and draft----> develop-----> trade/ let leave as FA recoup compensatory----> repeat, the rest.

...any person who would take the time to search out and image and post it as a response, I'm guessing. :whistling:

People that "don't care" ignore.

You don't?

I guess not. I can't seem to conjure what Shorts is going to be offered.

I guess the psychic waves are stronger north of the Mason-Dixon.
