Quote: You both make good points. Yet, when a HC leads a team to 3 straight winning seasons and 2 divisional titles, even in a division that hasn't been good the last couple of seasons, from my perspective it's still an impressive accomplishment. That much more when factoring in the Texans finishing all 3 regular seasons strong, their MNF win at Cincinnati last season against an eventual division winning Bengals team, and the win over the Chiefs earlier this season.

The Texans could easily be one and done again in the playoffs this season. But if someone would have told me before the season how much Brock Osweiler would struggle and that J.J. Watt would miss the vast majority of the season, a strong case can be made that Bill O'Brien and his staff got more out of this Texans team than a very high % of NFL coaching staffs would have.

I definitely see both sides and from what I saw of him at Penn state and new England, I know he has a history of good coaching as well.

I'm not advocating his firing but could understand if they did.

That was John Fox.

Though nothing should shock me when it comes to NFL Coaching Decisions,  as there have been many unexpected coaching changes over the years,  until this thread,   I never even thought about the possibility of Bill O' Brien being fired after this season.   If the Texans go in that direction,   I think there's a good chance it will set them back for many years to come.   IMO,  Bill O'Brien is a top 5 AFC HC.
With all the HC jobs likely opening up, I'm wondering if the real question is which coach can the Jaguars actually hire.

We won't be able to hire anyone and we'll have to go crawling back to Gus.

Lol. So someone wants to be stuck at the hip with Goff? In SF where this will be there 4th coach in 4 yrs? Etc.

Yeah ok. Those are definitely more ideal places for a coach.

Same could be said for Bortles and tied to the hip?

How the hell would they be tied to the hip? If he sucks next year hes gone. Goff was just taken 1st overall this year.

Nothing alike.

Depending on the route they go, the Jags have the advantage of being in a position to hire someone as early as this week unless they have their eyes on a coordinator for one of the teams going to the playoffs.

Possible openings:

Denver, Colts, SF, Chicago, Houston, LA, New Orleans, Buffalo, Jets, Bengals, Chargers

Some of these are unlikely, but there is more to worry about that LA and SF.

General question...

Do we want anyone that will be a coordinator in the playoffs?  I say no.  Today's game played out like a microcosm of our season.  Good enough play with poor execution.  Slightly better coaching but the same result because they wouldn't be aggressive in the second half.

Never said there wasnt. But Id say Jacksonville is one of the more patient owners, lot of talent that needs a goos coach, and you either get the good Blake next year or get your own guy in 2018. Id say its a pretty damn good opening.
I think the instant falling in love with Marrone shows how starved we have been. Like trying to marry the first girl who shows any interest after a long wait.

I think Marrone is a very good coach and he'll end up a head coach somewhere eventually.

Why would Houston fire BOB?

It's reported that if he doesn't win in the playoffs he could be fired

Highly doubt that happens considering he's playing with back up caliber QBs the last two years.
Probably my list (Best to worst of names linked)

Happy:

Coughlin

McDaniels

M. Smith (with a good OC)

Neutral:

Shanahan

Marrone

Unhappy:

Goodwin

The question is if Osweiler was his guy or forced on him.  They certainly didn't pay him back up caliber money.
