I wonder if Davis could fit in the OTTO position
Quote:NT/5-tech: Alualu, Abry Jones and DeAndre Coleman seem like they'll be competing for probably 2 rosters spots. People might think Alualu is a lock but Jones and Coleman might be more flexible, as well as being younger and locked up for several more years.

I agree that Alualu isn't the lock some people think he is.  I could see him as a "surprise" cut.  That being said, while I can see it, I wouldn't go as far as to predict it.  I think Coleman is the tough cut here and is placed on the practice squad (assuming no other team takes him for their active roster).

Quote:CB: Probably the toughest spot. I can count at least 8 guys who have a strong case for sticking so there will be 2 or 3 tough cuts here. Gratz, Ball, Blackmon, Mike and Jeremy Harris, Demetrius McCray, Rashaad Reynolds, Aaron Colvin (eventually)

One good thing is that Colvin doesn't count until he is taken off PUP.  If that's done mid-year, there may be an injury or two which makes the decision easier.  Even if not, we at least buy a little more time to evaluate our young players.

That being said, I think we keep six given the talent at this position.  (We'll keep one less linebacker than some teams given it's not a very deep position for us.)  I see Gratz, Ball and Blackmon as near locks.  McCray as probable.  That leaves Mike Harris, Jeremy Harris and Reynolds battling for two initial spots which goes down to one spot after Colvin returns.  I think it would be tough to cut Jeremy Harris, a draft pick who was injured last year.  I also think Mike Harris showed enough to earn a roster spot.  If he doesn't really impress, they may cut Reynolds and try to sneak him onto the practice squad.  I agree that this is a crowded position and will be very interesting to watch.

Quote:From a numbers perspective Miller looks safe. He is the only true NT on the team with experience. However if it doesn't look like he will come back from injury, I could see him being released

Depends on how they want to use Ziggy Hood.   He may have been a DE in Pittsburgh's 3-4, but he was a true 2 gapper and run clogger 5 tech.   Gus could be using him has a Mebane  1 in his defense.

Was thinking the same with both him and Smith from Arkansas.....even a third down Sam lb
another guy I saw on the roster is Gerald Rivers.

now, granted he hasn't done squat - but he's got good length and good speed for the LEO spot.

Will be interesting to see if he can play at all, I'll have my eye on him during pre-season.

He went undrafted (didn't play his senior year due to academic reasons) but was picked up as an undrafted rookie FA by the Rams.

We got him sometime thereafter after he was cut there.

Definitely Mike Brown, Mike Harris and Ryan Davis, I'd be concerned about getting cut.  3 good young, somewhat seasoned players. Davis helped us to 2 wins last year against Houston, showing some good play making ability in the clutch. Seems to have a knack for that, but he sure is in a crowded position

Quote:Agreed. Just pointing out that a fresh FA signing for moderate salary is no guarantee on making the 53.
This was echoed in the Ozone today...

I wouldn’t say Doss is lock to make the roster, and he likely will be competing withMike Brown[Image: icon-article-link.gif] for the fifth receiver position. If Doss wins the punt returner job, then it’s conceivable the Jaguars could keep a sixth receiver, though in that scenario they could keep him as the fifth receiver/punt returner as well.

Quote:Barring injury or Storm Johnson completely falling on his face, I think Todman only makes it if they keep 4 running backs.
I think they do keep 4 RB's (Gerhart, Todman, Johnson, Robinson) and only one FB (Ta'ufo'ou).
I still say Alualu might be in trouble if they want to keep more smaller, LEO type guys (Babin, Harris, Branch and Smith).  Have they said if Red Bryant will be starting at DE or DT?  That might be one of the determining factors on Alualu.  If Bryant starts day one at left DE, are they going to keep Alualu and his salary with the very limited production he offers?

Mike Harris is probably in trouble if they don't put Colvin on IR this year.  Harris or McCray may get that spot.  Blackmon starting at Nickel to begin the season.

Mike Brown is another possible casualty.  I don't see them keeping him over Doss, who they say is a "core 4" Special Teams stud and a good returner.

Doss' place on the roster was mainly is an end of roster special teamer/returner.   He's not an NFL caliber WR.     When the Jags drafted 2 WRs early, including a possible dynamic returner in Lee, his odds of making the roster took a big hit.  Not to mention a potential dynamic ST cover player in Telvin and eventually Colvin.       Of course, an offseason arrest is never good for a bubble player.

You don't know that.

It was pretty clear he was signed as a return specialist, IMO, given he lead the league in punt return average last year.

Right, but he also produced a 100 yard game when asked to make a spot start last season.

Plus, he's only 24.

His YPC is also impressive.

he definitely has upside.

It's also worth mentioning that Jim Hostler was a horrible WR coach and Doss now gets to work with Jerry Sullivan.

Agreed, he is a talented young returner with some receiver upside.

Mike brown would have to show significantly better at receiver (which is certainly possible) in order to make the roster.

Worth mentioning that on a team with much worse QB play Brown also had a 100 yard game, and he is only 25.

I think these two will compete for the 5th spot, and they will only keep 6 if Doss loses and they need him as a returner.

Thats probably the best point made in the thread.

Thanks TMD.
Todman could run wild if Gerhart blocks for him like he did for AP
