Quote:Man, I don't know if 4-5 million is a comfortable level for Shorts. I could certainly see 2-3 million per. I think the average wide receiver pay is just over 1 million per. But by all accounts he is the consummate professional with an outstanding work ethic.
Top tier receivers are making north of $10 million per. Some are pushing upward of $15 million.
Shorts is worth $4-5 million per year.
If the Jags offer him 2-3 he should walk.
You can't use the average salary because that includes an overwhelming majority of guys who are scrubs. You have to look at the market, and where Shorts is among starting receivers.

TMD's perfect 53 man roster would be allen robinson and 52 draft picks for 2015.

Yeah, I'm not concerned they'll overpay him. I don't think Cecil is going to be ridiculous in his expectations either.

Notable contracts signed by WRs this off season.
Eric Decker (5 years, $36.25M; $15M guaranteed)
DeSean Jackson (3 year, $24M; $16M guaranteed)
Riley Cooper (5 years, $25M; $10M guaranteed)
Anquan Boldin (2 years, $12M; $9M guaranteed)
Julian Edelman (4 years, $17M; $8M guaranteed)
Dexter McCluster (3 years, $12M; $4.5M guaranteed)
Jacoby Jones (4 years, $14M; $4.5M guaranteed)
I think he is a comparable WR in terms of importance to Riley Cooper and I think that's the sort of money that will get it done.

If they offer him something in that range, I'm betting he signs a deal happily. Cecil doesn't come across as a guy who is going to be difficult to deal with for an extension that puts him into this category.

If we can get him for a contract in the range of Edelman and Cooper I think that would be fair for both sides.

Ray Farmer comes out and mentions he's open to trading for a WR.

If we resign him soon, Cecil will probably get some where between what McCluster and Edelman got. If he holds out, goodbye Cecil....
I think the will want to resign him to a deal that will be trade-favorable down the road. Not one where nobody will want to touch him, and we'd just be forced to release him if Robinson and Lee do happen to outplay him.

Not sure what drafting receivers in the 2nd round has to do with Shorts contract situation. It didn't seem to concern Caldwell when he said they were working on an extension. That $4-5 million range is pretty much where he falls.
You're basically agreeing with what you're responding to if you bothered to look at Edelman's contract. He's getting paid around $5 million per year under his current contract. He has about the same total receiving yards as Shorts (1770 to Shorts' 1786), but it took him 5 years to get there while Shorts is coming off his 3rd year in the league. Shorts also has more TDs, and a higher average.
McCluster is getting $3 million a year and Shorts has more receiving yards, averages 6 more yards per reception, and more than twice as many touchdowns, all accomplished in a year less than McCluster.
You didn't really bother to research this, did you? It's okay to admit you just have an agenda here.

Draft and develop. Develop then trade. Makes sense.

Because letting middle of the road talents at WR walk after rookie contracts has just KILLED the steelers, right?

You mean the Riley Cooper who has less career catches, less career yards and only 2 more touchdowns despite playing for a year more and in vastly superior offenses to ours?

We're not the steelers, but if you need a straw man to try to prop up an argument, more power to you.
It's funny how resistant some of you are to extending Shorts as if we've got this dearth of talent at the WR spot that's proven it can do anything at the NFL level. We don't.

As has already been established, it's pretty clear abc didn't actually do any research before taking his shot.

Do you even know what a straw man argument is?
Point is you can draft and develop and let a guy get traded, or even walk away and keep winning.
Getting Shorts on a long term deal here won't be what determines the success of the Jaguars.
