He's just setting the table for an endless tirade once the Jaguars win their first game in 2014. In his mind, the good teams lose intentionally to assure they get the top pick in the draft.

Tenneseee. Tommy Smith will pay Whisenhunt to tank games.

Quote:Disagree with Bridgewater being a reach at 3. Bridgewater is far more polished than any of these players coming out of college
- Cam Newton
- Kaepernick
- Wilson
- Flacco
- Brady
I would select any of the above QB's at 3 any day (perhaps not Newton).
GM's also take into account the class for next year, and unless all of those underclassmen declare, it looks like a pretty thin QB class. Take Teddy, let Henne play and take several beatings, keep building, and then lets be a playoff team in 2015 and 2016.
If the Jags took Bridgewater at #3, I wouldn't be disappointed. I would consider it a reach if the intention is to bring him in and let him sit behind Henne this year. If you pick Bridgewater at #3, it's going to be difficult not to put him out there as quickly as possible.
Being more polished than the list above is a nice thing, but I don't think it's a guarantee of success at the next level, especially when you're talking about a guy who is not built to take a beating in the NFL. I'm not sure how durable Bridgewater is going to be when he's getting pounded by 260-300+ lb linemen repeatedly.

Exactly. It's a conspiracy to let every team in the division get their franchise QB.
Queue the tinfoil hats.
And now Mayock has Jimmy G ranked over Teddy. Anddd there goes any respect I had for him. You want to say Teddy is the 3rd behind Bortles and Johnny I can understand. But jimmy G.... all credibility lost.

I saw that. Is Mayocks mock specifically related to where he thinks the player will get taken OR his assessed value on that player?
I like it because I'd be happy with Teddy with the last pick of the 1st round (in a trade with Seattle).
Need to get him prior to the beginning of round 2

I think he used to be about personal rankings. But maybe he got burned one too many times by guys like Danny Watkins and Tyson Alulau.
It seems like now all he has turned into is another mouthpiece for NFL teams.
Quote:Sigh, if people are really putting this much paralysis by analysis into Teddy I am absolutely terrified of how they are going to treat Winston next year. Obviously it's super early and he still has time to develop, but he also has so many flaws right now. Mariota is easily rated higher than him at this point, and I know a lot of people on here don't really like Mariota but he is so much more polished as a QB and has just as much potential.
I was actually saying that (what you responded to) sarcastically.

Yep. The criticisms of teddy make no sense. Still hoping we get him at 3 or some point in the draft.

It's like Bizarro Mike Mamula.
About 20 years ago, there was a DE/OLB from Boston College named Mike Mamula.
He saw his stock skyrocket when he ran a good 40 at the Combine.
He wound up being a top 10 pick, and one of the biggest busts in memory.
He became a cautionary tale about placing too much stock in the combine and offseason workouts.

That was a good article until it became an indictment about racism. I don't think that's what is driving down his draft stock. I think what has happened with Bridgewater is he is a victim of the media hype machine. They want to create these impressions about players being better than they actually are, over-hyping them in the media only to tear them back down after the fact when they don't necessarily match the hype they created.
I've never disqualified Bridgewater as a lesser QB. He has all of the intangibles you want. He's got a great football IQ, he's poised, he's able to read defenses and make all the passes. My only real rub on him is the level of competition he's faced, and of course the slight build. Both of which are genuinely minor concerns, but still enough that, if I was picking, I wouldn't take him at 3.
If he lands in the right situation (which Jacksonville very well could be), he can prove to be a very good starting QB in the league. Or, he lands somewhere that has a mess of a line and no receivers, and he becomes another missed opportunity.
I hate that this article brought race into it because I don't think that's what is at play. I think it's just a matter of media hacks over selling the product, then having to backtrack once they started getting feedback from the people who actually make the decisions like scouts and GMs around the league. They're not going to admit they're wrong, so they have to come up with some reason why his draft stock has fallen (assuming it's fallen as far as some of them are trying to spin it.).

people fall for it every year. Just look at Logan Thomas. The guy might be the worst QB prospect in the draft, but yet I have heard he could go in the second round? Come on now.

I think Bridgewater simply breaks the mold of black QB's drafted in the top 5, every black QB that's been drafted that high (Michael Vick, Cam Newton, Jamarcus Russell, RGIII etc..) have been physical freaks of nature, I'm assuming that's what the writer was referring to.

This team fell into that trap with Blaine Gabbert. He's another guy who came out of nowhere and was suddenly touted as one of the, if not THE top prospect in the draft. By the time the Jaguars were on the clock, it looked like they were getting a bargain for a guy who could be the face of the franchise. That worked out well.
I'm not comparing Bridgewater to Gabbert here. But, I think there is some correlation between the two where the media machine hype plays a part in where they wind up.

Or nfl personnel don't know how to handle a black qb who isn't run first. Matt waldman talked about it too and I think it's definitely part of it.

The difference is, Bridgewaters hype matches his production, the same couldn't be said for Blaine Gabbert.
