Quote:I think Bridgewater simply breaks the mold of black QB's drafted in the top 5, every black QB that's been drafted that high (Michael Vick, Cam Newton, Jamarcus Russell, RGIII etc..) have been physical freaks of nature, I'm assuming that's what the writer was referring to.

Bridgewater is Byron Leftwich with slightly better mobility and better mechanics.

Leftwich wasn't the prototypical black QB.  Big, slow footed, pocket passer, hardly athletic.  He could read defenses with the best of them, which was good because the slow feed and the long windup required something to compensate.  He'd make quick decisions, then go through the long motion of getting the ball out.

Bridgewater has the same ability to read defenses and to make quick decisions.  He's got a quicker release and better footwork, but he's still more of a traditional pocket passing QB.  He's smaller than Leftwich, but he has the same kind of small hands.  Heck, Leftwich wore a size 8 shoe.

Like I said, if Bridgewater lands in the right situation, he will be a very good QB.  He could even develop into elite talent with time.  But, he could also turn out to be a huge flop.  We'll see.

If the Jags took him at 3, I wouldn't be running to the old Modis Building to get in line.  I think he could do well here given time.  He just wouldn't be my first option at #3.
Quote:Or nfl personnel don't know how to handle a black qb who isn't run first. Matt waldman talked about it too and I think it's definitely part of it.

I think you would expect to handle him the way you would a white QB who isn't run first.  They've got enough experience there to know what to do.  Again, I don't think this is about race.  I think it's just a matter of the hype machine overselling a player, then when exposed, trying to make excuses as to why he's suddenly sliding.  In all probability, he's not sliding on any team board.  This is just more media perception.
Quote:The difference is, Bridgewaters hype matches his production, the same couldn't be said for Blaine Gabbert.

They hype matches the production, but there are flags.  The level of competition being one of them.  Yes, he played well against a good Florida defense and a marginally decent Miami team.  But, the level of competition he faced on a weekly basis at Louisville was hardly the murderer's row of college football.

So Bortles is knocked too? And hasn't the whole competition thing been proven not to matter Royce actually complied the defensive rankings in one thread of Teddy and luck. Teddy actually faced tougher defenses.

I still think it's party a race thing tho. Nfl is big on tradition and teddy is not the traditional type of qb in their eyes.

Also 6'2 215 is big enough to be a qb.

Too many falling for a player like a schoolgirl.  Happens every year, but you think some would have learned by now, especially since it happened for many of the same suspects just last year.
Quote:If the Jags took Bridgewater at #3, I wouldn't be disappointed.  I would consider it a reach if the intention is to bring him in and let him sit behind Henne this year.  If you pick Bridgewater at #3, it's going to be difficult not to put him out there as quickly as possible.

Being more polished than the list above is a nice thing, but I don't think it's a guarantee of success at the next level, especially when you're talking about a guy who is not built to take a beating in the NFL.  I'm not sure how durable Bridgewater is going to be when he's getting pounded by 260-300+ lb linemen repeatedly.

Yeah I agree. But, then you could consider Luke Joeckel a reach because he was taken as a "RT" but then 2nd quarter of the season he is starting LT. I think if we take Teddy let him sit a few games then put him in. Totally, It is definitely no guarantee, but I believe the chance of success might be greater than someone who doesn't possess the traits Bridgewater possesses.

I think sometimes we also forget how Bridgewater can run too. Poor Byron. A turtle could run faster than him. Yeah he wouldn't be my first option either. If Clowney is there, forget about it. But, Im not really in favor of drafting a WR at 3 or an OLB at 3. I think we have so many selections and this is going to be a deep draft class, and no one knows where the heck these QB's are going to be drafted (Values are all over the place). Take Teddy, he has all of those desirable traits that you mentioned. The next Luck or Manning probably won't be in the draft for another 10 years. You can win without a Luck or Manning type QB, and most teams have.

Fair enough, what you consider him at 6? I believe the Jaguars have an excellent opportunity to move back 3 spots, I don't think the Falcons are willing to give up multiple 1st round picks to Houston for Clowney. Khalil Mack is a guy that would fit perfectly in Mike Nolan's Zone blitzing scheme, I can see Thomas D. & David C swapping spots on May 8th.

I don't consider Joeckel being a reach regardless of the position he was slotted to play as a rookie,  Everyone knew he was eventually going to move to the left side, so that pick was more than justified.

Bridgewater isn't a run first QB.  He's more of a traditional pocket passer.  He can run, but that's not his first instinct.

We'll see what happens soon enough.

It really depends on what's there at 6.  He'd be a better option outside of the top 5 for value.

The Jaguars are in a really good spot in this year’s draft, they're guaranteed one of the 4 elite (Clowney, Mack, Watkins, Robinson) prospects, if they want to maximize the value of the 3rd pick there should be an abundant of teams (within reach) looking to trade up. Atlanta needs a pass rusher and a pass protector, Buffalo needs a WR, Detroit needs a WR, Tampa can use a receiver and a tackle, I expect an abundance of trades in the 1st round.

Race is the only reason Manziel isnt the consensus number one pick. If he was black he would easily go 1st.
Say no to Teddy at 3

How many 5-11 QBs have been drafted #1 overall in history?

Again, race has nothing to do with it.  If Manziel had the same measurables as say, Cam Newton, and he happened to be white. he'd get the same consideration Newton did.  He's not the #1 pick in this draft because he's too short, unwilling to stick to the script, and a bit of a head case.

Vick is pretty close

But he isn't < 6 feet tall.

how many less than average arm, 6'2", smaller conference, small frame qb has ever went in the top 10?

Haha you're acting as if the AAC is the Horizon League, get over the conference crap. Didn't Blake Bortles play in the same conference? If you want to mention frame (although that's stupid as well as he was 220 + LBS before having his jaw wired shut) and average arm that's fine, NFL evaluators aren't ignorant enough to consider the AAC a "smaller conference".
Any conference that isn't the SEC is considered small to some of you.
