That was fast

Quote:The same way DQwell Jackson signed with the Colts.  They weren't free agents, they got cut.

There were free agents because they got cut.   The free agents who start signing on Tuesday will not be free agents until Tuesday when their contracts are up.   Red Bryant and D'Qwell Jackson had their contracts end when they were released early by their teams.

One thing that can't be overlooked is his presence in the locker room. This was from one of the Seattle writers when he got cut:

Quote:Bryant would be a tough loss for the locker room — he was the defensive team captain this year as voted by his teammates and has the second-longest tenure on the team, drafted in 2008 (Brandon Mebane, taken in 2007, is the only player who has been on the team longer than Bryant). He’s an undeniable leader of the defensive line, which was as key to the Super Bowl season as any other aspect of the team.  You don’t need to spend more than about 10 minutes in the locker room to feel what an influence he is on everybody he is in there.

Quote:can someone explain how red can visit and sign already--i thought the rules were only agents and no official offers until tuesday--just dont want us to get into trouble

Players who were under contract and released by their teams are allowed to negotiate and sign deals, and, while free agents, are basically a different class of free agents than the ones whose contracts ran out as of the end of the 2013 football season.  Those are the ones who are prohibited from signing until 3/11/14.

Reasonable money. Similar to what I called for, so I can't and won't complain.

Good job here, Jags.

He was their second longest tenured player and team captain. Also, his father in law is former Seahawks player Jacob Green. He was very well liked.
Great deal for both sides.  IF we can sign bennet this will be a really good line

Still thrilled about this pickup. Not flashy or a "big splash" but just what this locker room needs. Gus is a great motivator and now his go to guy will be Bryant. Look for him and Babin to really be huge leaders going forward. Bryant still has a few good years left in the tank. His presence on the line is going to free up pass rushers. I'm almost positive that Mack will now be our pick at 3. This may have been answered already, but he plays both OLB and DE correct? Can double as Leo and then drop to OLB while Branch and Babin play LEO? Trying not to drink too much Teal Koolaid but I think we improve to 6-8 wins next year. Our window will be approaching in the next 2 or 3 years

The thought of a 320-lb. linebacker makes me chuckle a bit. I expected Bryant to find a 3-4 team that would pay him a lot more. $4.25M/yr for someone who projects as an immediate starter at DE isn't bad at all. I still think that starting Alualu and drafting a developmental player would make more sense in the long run, but it's much easier to cut a guy two years into a four-year budget deal because he's been replaced than it is to cut someone two years into a five-year huge money deal. Bryant's not a long-term fix, but he'll hold down the fort until a kid is ready to take over.

What happened??

Sorry, I must have fallen out of my office chair and was out for a little bit after actually seeing the words "I can't and won't complain" and "Good job here, Jags" typed by The Mad Jag.

I'm still a bit woozy and don't know if I really read those words or if I am just dreaming that I read those words.

Somebody help me out and tell me if it's true or not.
I seriously felt that we would land him. Our options are truely open for the third pick within the draft...

Not a bad figure for Four Years... I hope that he plays in accordance to the contract though...

Quote:I hope its like henne's deal and frontloaded on the first half as to allow him to be cut halfway through the contract if things don't work out or we find someone better in the draft.

4 years 17 mill is ok to get Alualu off the field.
I'm pretty sure he will still see a good portion of the field, they do thing called rotating, where they switch guys in and out depending on the situation or someone needs a breather.
Quote:It's a four year deal for DT Red Bryant and #Jaguars - via O'Halloran
Three and a half career sacks. Really? Is it possible there are two Red Bryants?

Quote:Remember there are a ton of teams with a whole lot of cap space, and in addition to that the entire salary cap got a near 10 million boost. Just keep that in mind when you see how much some of these guys get. It will look like a whole lot but it will mostly be because of a large jump in inflation.

There really aren't very many teams with salary cap space, and certainly not many with a whole lot of cap space.  Most of the league was pressed up close to the salary cap before the 10 million dollar increase.  The 10 million dollar increase basically allowed most of the teams to resign their own players and a few more to have some wiggle in free agency.  Without looking and off the top of my head, there were probably 4 or 5 teams with a lot of space before and maybe 1 or 2 more now.
