Quote:He was just double dipping. He was still on the Bills payroll. Made a cash grab here and seems to have added nothing.
Based on the play of the offensive line, I'm not sure how he earns his next job.  He certainly did himself no favors here, other than the bank account.
Quote:I've heard the Bengals might let Lewis go. Man, I'd love to have him. The Bengals were in a similar situation to our own when Lewis got the Cincy job--young, talented.
No, thank you.  I don't want another squishy player-friendly coach.  We need a hard-nosed professional.
Quote:Well, for the last five years I've asked for a coach with a proven winning record as an NFL head coach. Mike Smith certainly fits that criteria, so I'd have no reason to complain.

My #1 choice is still Jon Gruden.
You won't see Gruden come out of the MNF booth unless it's for one of the top 5-8 teams in a destination city.  And I don't see one of those teams going after him.
Quote:i feel like everyone talking about wanting guys with experience who are disciplinarian is just a covert way of saying "old white dude who yells at everyone" cause thats their idea of what a good coach looks like.
Nope.  Don't pull the race card.  Herm Edwards would fit the bill.  But he's never leaving ESPN.
Quote:I want a young, up and coming Coordinator (preferably on the offensive side,) who has proven their worth in their former positions, but someone who won't bring in some gimmicky schemes. I want a coach who will bring some youth, yet hold the players accountable when they make mistakes. No more "rah rah" guys who candy coat pathetic performances. I don't want some old re-tread who had success many years ago, but faltered down the stretch. Taking a former head coach is like choosing a so-so veteran free agent player over an unproven 1st round pick with tons of potential. I'll take the rookie every time.

A reasonable desire, but I don't see any Andrew Luck's of the coaching world.

Money talks, and Gruden likes Florida. The Jags have a solid roster, and lots of cap room. The big question I see is whether or not he believes he can make Bortles into a star.

Quote:I am not stumping for Cooter personally. I like him but I think it's a bit too early.

If we couldn't get Shanahan or maybe Patricia and McDermott then I would probably want the experienced/second chance dude.

Cooter has shown as an OC he can quickly turn around a struggling offense and sustain the new success. That is the kind of guy we need for the OC job. My concern about him is coaching the defense because he has never done that.

Jon Gruden said very early in multiple coach hiring cycles he does not want to leave ESPN for a coaching job because he loves where he is now.

D6 can say all he wants about Teryl Austin and Jim Bob Cooter, but they have never been head coaches.

I've already said on multiple occasions that I don't think Jim Bob Cooter is going to get an NFL HC offer in the 2017 coaching cycle.  He's probably at least a year away.  However,  regardless of whether Teryl Austin gets an NFL HC job or not this coming winter,   I'm absolutely convinced he's earned the opportunity.   I felt that way the previous 2 years as well.    Even with the injury situation on Defense,   the Lions have not given up more than 20 points in a game for 7 straight games.   The last time that happened was 1961.   Austin's communication skills,  adjustments,  and leadership ability have contributed greatly to the results the Defense has been getting.    It's not a unit that's getting many style points but all that matters is bottom line results.
Quote:Good coaches can flame out when they are hired by the wrong teams, but I don't want McDaniels either. He is made to just be an OC.

I know Mike Smith is a defensive guy, but his success in Atlanta makes him a better candidate than any offensive assistant who is likely to be available.

I prefer defensive coaches to offensive coaches as head coaches, but to be successful in today's game I think they have to be willing to let the offense breathe a little. Mike Smith seemed able to do that in Atlanta. Del Rio, on the other hand, wanted three yards and a cloud of dust. Gus, meanwhile, is just now getting the defense under control. Maybe in four more years the offense will be competitive.

Cooter will be a HC eventually. You root for the Cardiac Cats. How quickly he turned around Detroit's offense after Joe Lombardi was fired and his ability to sustain it is very attractive. Is it just inexperience being almost a rookie and too young to run for president (I hope you get the reference) that would keep him in Detroit longer?

I had a bad feeling in previous coaching cycles teams only interviewed Austin because he is black. Now that the Lions are winning with defense it will be less about the Rooney Rule than last year.

JDR was working with our strengths. David Garrard was an average QB handing off the ball to elite runners and did not have good receivers. At the time we had good run blockers. Any smart coach would do the same thing. Look at what he is doing in Oakland: telling Derek Carr to throw all over the place. Fans did not like it because running all the time is less exciting and more predictable, but it worked.

I get the reference.  It was a story earlier in the season.

The age factor is the primary reason why I don't think JIm Bob Cooter will get a HC opportunity this coming winter.    Especially,  when factoring in a legal issue he had a number of years ago that he's apparently done a great job putting behind him.   Yet,  I agree that he's on track to eventually becoming an NFL HC.

The Lions were # 2 in Defense in 2014,  Teryl Austin's first season as Lions DC.   The Lions Defense played a huge role in the 6-2 finish in the 2015 season.

Teryl Austin mentioned that 2 of the teams  ( he wisely didn't name them ) that interviewed him this past winter weren't truly serious about hiring him.   Otherwise,  the other 6 interviews he received the last two years apparently were on merit,  which is what they should be,
Gus will be fired, we all know that at this point. I have to go on record to say that as a life long Jaguar fan, I have never been more disappointed in a season than this one. I am equally disappointed in Shad Khan for not acting quicker in his decision making. At this point, Gus Bradley will go down as one of the worst coaches of all time, statistically, this is backed up. Im not one of those fans to grab torch and pitch fork and demand things go my way, but I also am a firm believe in action not words. Shad Khan is an excellent businessman and its true, the team has become a bigger name under him. But the hierarchy of this team is excellent on selling snake oil to get fannies in the seats. Every offseason its the same old thing. Tune up the stadium, market the hell out of the team, get a top pick, buy some big named FA acquisitions then we all drum to the tune of this is our year. Its clear this franchise is profits first product later. At some point though, when is enough a enough? Khans gotten everything he has ever wanted and hes turning a profit every year. Hell, he took a game away from all of the season ticket holders to profit overseas. At some point though, the fans are going to get tired, no matter how much profit London is getting you, the fans are frankly sick of it. I have never been so disinterested in football in my entire life. Since I was a child, I have been a die hard fan, but over the years, its become exhausting, the air is out of the balloon and frankly, tomorrow, Manchester City vs Arsenal is first priority over the Jaguars. Khans got the off the field down pact, now its time to focus on the actual product on the field. When do the fans get to be happy? We have got to be one of the most miserable franchises in the NFL. I really hope things turn around and its time the other owner stops counting the profits and maybe actually steps in and focuses on the team.

It starts with the head coach and we need a home run hire.  I actually am buying this Coughlin stuff. I think theres teeth to it. If theres one thing that this team is missing is leadership and discipline. Under Gus, we are a mess. He isnt a leader, hes a one of the players essentially. Hes one of the hommies, theres no accountability, leadership or discipline. Its a me first show off type of attitude and on game day it shows. Stupid penalties left and right. Personal fouls, jumping offsides when we are getting the ball back, getting into fights, ejections. Its a mess. The team is the most fouled team in the NFL , theres no discipline. Its just "o well we will try harder next time". Under Bellichick, do you think that crap would be allowed? No, no matter who you are your butt would be benched or cut for personal fouls, showing up late to practice, jumping offsides, getting into fights. Under Tom Coughlin, this stuff wouldn't fly. Coughlin is a good head coach who personifies professionalism , leadership and discipline. We dont need the head coach being one of the players, the players need to hate him than learn to respect him because hes tough. The players will learn to respect him when the results start flying in. People want to hang around winners.

The Mike Smith rumor is interesting because it makes a ton of sense. Hes actually a pretty decent coach and would probably be a solid hire. But yes, it wouldn't be a move the needle type of move. But I do like that move if it does happen. Im definitely not on board with another young and upcoming coach. We need to win and win now. Theres talent on this roster, it just needs to be used correctly.
The Mike Smith rumor makes no sense. Nobody is allowed to talk to him until the Buccaneers are done playing unless they miraculously clinch a playoff bye week. The Buccaneers would not want to give anybody permission before their last game (which could be in the playoffs). In addition, we are concentrating on playing against all three division rivals. This is not a time the Jaguars would be thinking about who their next HC will be because they still have one.

From what I understand, ESPN is paying Gruden like a top 5 coach already.

Would you turn down top 5 coaching salary having to do minimal amount of work for a cake job or would you prefer to get paid like a top 5 coach and have to put in 60+ hours a week and have to prove yourself on a weekly basis?
Quote:Lovie Smith has run a defense that has shown little success for a ling time and never adapted and is now out of the NFL.

Sorry, but I dont see the same thing here at all unless we're just looking at the coach of the year and playoff appearences aspect. As a coach Mike Smith is without a doubt in another league.
Ok what about Rex Ryan then? Super Bowl winning coordinator and also won assistant coach of the year. Had good success early like Mike Smith. Not playing a brand of football that is outdated or whatnot.

Almost guaranteed to be fired after two seasons.

Unlike you, some people can hold more than a single thought in their mind at a time. Everyone not on the Jaguars coaching staff is already thinking about the offseason.

Got fired and immediatelycgot picked up basically by the Bills. Didnt work out for him but got a 2nd chance awfully quick...

Just because Rex flamed out doesnt mean Mike Smith fill follow in his footsteps. Talk about coaches that failed the first time and worked out the 2nd time letd take a look at Belichek, Kubiak, Carroll, Tom Coughlin in NY after here, Andy Reid, Tony Dungy, John Fox in Denver etc. etc. Those just come to my mind quickly.

Theres going to be guys who didnt work out, theres going to be guys who do. No one knows until their hired again and they get rheir second shot. Mike Smith deserves one.
Why does anybody think Mike Smith would flame out in Jacksonville just because it happened to other defensive assistants knowing about his success in Atlanta and Tampa Bay?

I agree, but the majority of people are talking like if we simply grab Coughlin or Mike Smith that the floor is the playoffs in short order. All I have been trying to point out there are plenty of examples of the other side of the coin when hiring proven head coaches too.
