Quote:I didn't realize professional football players are only noble in their endeavors if they're playing for charity, and not to make money.  When did this happen?

I think the concern is -- will he become an Albert Haynesworth.

Everyone is in it for the money.  There's nothing wrong with that.  The question becomes -- do they still show up to play once they get paid.  Or do they become Chris Johnson/Albert Haynesworth/Who Douglass.
Quote:Are you kidding me? You don't want to draft him because he want's to get paid?

He's not getting paid if he doesn't play well. Get a clue.

I'm pretty sure just about any player would have said the same thing.
He did get paid. A free college education, room and board. Anybody with student loans knows he got paid.

Beyond that.. if he says getting some additional compensation would have made him stay, he is lying.
Using this same logic, we should only draft seniors this year because all of the juniors and redshirt sophomores that decided to come out this year are only trying to get paid.

Wanting to get paid for your hard work in your career field is a diva's mentality.
Quote:Nothing wrong with that. I'm pretty sure Fred Taylor said the same thing at one point.

True.

No matter how many excuses and/or rationalizations kids that leave early try to use, they all leave for the money.

Some are just more honest about it than others.

It may be time for me to be off the Clowney wagon, that character is just too much of a concern for me from the outside. Maybe we will get some more info later that shows otherwise, but it just sounds like he is just playing for money, which just isn't gonna get you to be a top performing DE consistently.

.....I don't know what you have seen, but from the videos I have seen he seems to be giving a lot of effort to me.

Only thing I see at times is a perceived lack of conditioning, but I have come to understand that he basically goes all out every play and that tires him out. With the DE rotation we want to establish like they have in Seattle as well as other places, I doubt that he will be a problem for us.

Also I have no idea how injuries affected his play this year, and neither does anyone for that matter.

Clowney is a beast. Texans will take him

Michael Bennett said it well yesterday when asked if he would take a "hometown discount" to stay in Seattle:

“There is no such thing as discount,” “This is not Costco, this is not Walmart, this is real life."

Agree.

Nothing wrong with money being a motivator. Nothing wrong with deciding to leave early for the NFL for money. Nothing wrong with squeezing every penny you can out of the NFL.

However if money is the one and only motivator, you will not be a great player. You have to have a burning desire to be the best you can be, otherwise you will slack.
My feelings about him have been negative since I read he admitted he is a slacker in practice and his junior year statistics reflect that. A player who puts in 100% effort is not going to have the kind of season he did. Also, after we ignored one drunk driving arrest on the assumption Justin Blackmon would not do it again we learned the hard to always include traffic violations in our scouting reports, so his two speeding tickets should be a red flag as well. If his brain was as good as his body, I would love him.

Thanks for sharing, I hadn't seen that before.  Love it!

That being said, I'd say the culture Bradley is leading and the buy in he's getting would be a very positive environment for someone perceived as "motivationally challenged."

If there were a place to worry about a so-called "unmotivated" player landing, to me this isn't that place.
Quote:His job in college was to play football. Why wouldn't he be about the money?
And he slacked at his job, what makes you think he won't start doing that just cause he gets paid.

Why would we need to worry about that if we drafted him? He would only have a rookie deal.

His stats are still way better than guys like Dion Jordan who were picked top ten.
Quote:I think some fans have this heroic "for the love of the game" image of pro athletes. They are called pro athletes for a reason. It's their job and they have a short shelf life. They try to make as much money as possible in the short amount of time they are able to play. And who can blame them? They are thrown out like a broken down racehorse as soon as they can no longer compete.
I have no nonsensical opinion like that. But if you think Peyton Manning preps like he does just for the money YOUR insane not me. Peyton is a competitor through and through.

Can you honestly say Clowney is a competitor, all the time? The guy has got to have some drive other than money, to be an elite player in this league. Plenty of guys have 'talent' and can't make it happen. I know Clowney is arrogant, but does he take pride in his craft? I am not so sure. Reminds me a bit of Vernon Davis before he got kicked out of a game by Mike Singletary. The guy was bogus till it clicked for him. My question is, will it/has it clicked for Clowney, or is he a Haynesworth type(at best)?
Quote:Why would we need to worry about that if we drafted him? He would only have a rookie deal.
He would be our top 3 pick! Don't tell me you can't do better than Haynesworth with a top 3!

Edit: Its crazy to think just cause we don't pay him much that its okay if he slacks, the opportunity cost is huge! There will be all-pro players in this draft, and to miss one of them cause of a guy who sometimes comes to play would be heinous.

A little more elaboration with some references would be nice (not just the cut ups). Appreciate the actual attempt to answer however.

Let me know when Clowney started fighting his teammates and stomping on people's faces.

Those aren't just cut ups, its all his snaps from each of the games listed (or at the very least a large majority of them). It shows the good and the bad, and there isn't much bad....
