I think everything depends on what other changes are made on the roster. If they draft a QB, or find another in free agency to add to the mix, possibly. But, his contract is favorable, and he's familiar with the coaches, the personnel, and the system. There's really no rush to dump him, especially if you're listening to what Caldwell and Bradley have been saying of late. I don't think it's a slam dunk that Gabbert is gone unless there's a better alternative added to the roster.
Henne is an insurance policy. That is all.
Henne could be a cheap (hopefully) backup who knows the system. I wouldn't be upset to see him back as long as we have legit starter.
Imagine we take a QB in the draft, we're 8-4 and heading to the playoffs, then the QB goes down. Who do you want stepping in? Gabbert who can't get past the 50, Stanzi and Scott with no NFL experience behind them or Henne who has shown he can work with sub-standard talent and start? Or do you draft a late round rookie when we have too many needs on the team already?
Agree with Kotite from the first page. Henne is sub par at best and is only notable for being better than gabbert which pretty much every starter and backup in the league can easily claim.
He never puts the total package together for more than 1 or 2 plays and goes Dr.Jekyll / Mr Hyde for long stretches of games.That said if we do draft a high end QB hopefully Henne wont see the field unless injury but i do feel much better with Henne coming in than Scott or Gabbert so at least Henne has that.
I'm okay with re-signing Henne as long as:
A. He's cheap enough
B. He's not Plan A (and Gabbert isn't either)
He knows the system. But that's about his only real plus. For the right price, keeping him around another year is fine. Let's just hope he eventually becomes Plan C and that we never have to ask "When are we going to bring Henne off the... Bus? I don't know. Maybe Henne will be a bus driver after he is done in the NFL. Yeah. That seems right. I think it's the stache.
If henne comes back gabbert is as good as gone.
If "negotiations" are anything other than Caldwell sliding a scrap of paper across the table to Henne that says "no signing bonus, veteran minimum" then he needs his head checked. Henne doesn't fit the mold of player this team is trying to get. He's coming up on 30 and has shown he's a low end backup at best.
unless henne signs cheap, they will not sign him. They have to pay gabbert weatehr they cut him or not so wai sign henne when gabbert is already on the team as back up. If they sign henne most likley we wont be getting a high draft QB.
I'd be perfectly happy with Henne on the roster. If he is the starter for any more that half the season though, that sucks.

If the goal is to throw the season then there's no need for Henne. Gabbert can take care of that.
The only reason to go out and sign a free agent is because you think they offer something the guys on the roster already don't or you want more depth.
If Henne is in there the Jaguars likely will be looking at another top 5 pick, but if the top 5 pick is the goal just put Gabbert in and let Henne retire.

There does not appear to be a 'can't miss' franchise QB next year, and it's a gamble to think if there is one, that the Jags will be able to get such star prospect. I don't see them passing up on taking a QB this year early in the draft, or trying to rely on the duo of Gabbert and Henne again. If a QB drafted this year doesn't work out, they can draft another one next year.

With the current state of our franchise, you take the BPA. We have a top pick in the second round which can allow us to get a guy like Carr, or trade up into the later first round to grab him. I do not want Teddy Bustwater anywhere near a Jags uniform.

kinda like the brownies have done the past 7 years keep drafting QBs and not having any depth. Only giving a newly drafted QB 1 year is silly. If they dont believe there is a QB in this years draft then why waste the pick on one.

OR Manziel with the third overall pick. It's a bit presumptive, but I guess that's just the way DiRocco sees it.
If Caldwell comes out and says something along the lines or a variation of "we don't see a QB in this draft worthy of the #3 overall selection" then okay...that, to me at least, looks "more and more like the team will pass on a QB" with the third pick.
Signing Henne though? Nah, man. Henne's bad. That doesn't mean anything. Signing Henne will have no impact on whether the team takes a QB in round one. None.

Not getting a franchise quarterback could spell another 2-3 years of sub .500 play. Even though getting Manziel and Bridgewater do not guarantee the opposite of that, I would like to believe either could lead us above .500 rather than not taking either of them and settling on defense.
I mean, having an all-pro defensive end is great, but look at the Texans. They have the BEST defensive end in the league, and are sitting at the bottom of the barrel. Which teams have at least good quarterbacks and weren't competitive this year?
