We have very different opinions on Big Ben. I think he is one of the elite qbs in the nfl. He does some pretty incredible stuff with one of the worst offensive lines in the nfl. If Bortles is Big Ben Then I take him three without hesitation. I'm just not sure he will be Big Ben good.

Then you and I do not have very different opinions on Roethlisberger. I agree, he does some incredible things, but I don' think he is quite in that Brady-Manning-Brees-Rodgers group. He is very good at what he does, he just isn't the best around at it. And if you could guarantee me that Bortles will have a Roethlisberger type of career, I'd gladly take him at three, but that's the pain in the bahonkas about the draft, ain't it? There are no guarantees.

If you look at recent Super Bowls, as many have been won by those QB's (Roethlisberger (x2), Eli (x2), Flacco) than your blue chippers. As good as Rodgers, Brees and Peyton are, they each only have one title.

Everyone gets all giddy with the "elite" guys, but they are still just a piece of the puzzle. Granted, it's a very important piece, but it's still only one piece. So many things have to go right to win a title, that even having an elite QB doesn't guarantee one. Along that line of thought, isn't it better to get one that you feel can play at the highest level for the longest career instead of a guy who you have concerns over making it to his third contract?

I think it's safe to say either bridgewater, Manziel or Bortles will fall to us

Isn't he an interesting case though? He may never turn out to be an elite QB -- really though, how many do? -- but it's looking like he'll have a solid ten year career. Is that worth the #3 overall pick?

Good point, Deacon. I think that comes down to draft philosophy. Is a solid double better than a home run potential with bust possibility? Personal preference, I think.

Especially at the QB position. If you swing and miss on that, your franchise is set back quite a bit. But if you have a solid performer there, it gives you time to build up your roster and gives you some "margin" as to the other positions to which you add talent.

I think it is definitely worth the third pick. You need a qb to win and I trust Dave can surround whoever the qb is with enough talent to be successful.


I am too biased to really discuss Bortles. I'm sure I overrate him because he is the best qb ucf has ever had (during my time following them).

How people compare him to Gabbert is beyond me.  He had a much better college career and they play nothing alike.  Gabbert crumbles in the pocket, and if anything, Bortles needs to learn how to fall down and take a sack more.  He doesn't fear contact, he just needs to slow it down a little.

I watched a little bit of the game and the guy looked good. The running toss to a back from out of his endzone that the back dropped really stood out as a great play to me.

 

Definitely is looking more like the Jaguars could get a guy this year and have him be a real player.

I understand what you're saying, I guess I just can't get comfortable with a safe pick at number 3.

Agreed and cant really go wrong with any of them IMO.  Although I obviously think Manziel is the best choice.

Bortles lacks the touch and accuracy of Bridgewater right now but I'm starting to like him more and more.  I went to the Texans site and was reading concerns about Bridgewater's extremely small hands.

People will just look at any QB they don't like as say he's "the next Gabbert" or "Gabbert 2.0".
