Quote:Bortles lacks the touch and accuracy of Bridgewater right now but I'm starting to like him more and more. I went to the Texans site and was reading concerns about Bridgewater's extremely small hands.
Small hands are generally a concern for a QB, especially with fumbles. But that would seem like a bigger issue for a QB that has the reputation of holding onto the ball too long, wheras Teddy has been lauded for quick decision making and getting rid of the ball fast.
Bortles needs more polish in my opinion.. My only hope is that he doesn't declair until next season. I cant see Bortles excelling at the next level just yet.. My opinion..
Quote:People will just look at any QB they don't like as say he's "the next Gabbert" or "Gabbert 2.0".
Gabbert was a very unique bust. Most young busts are criticized for throwing into crowds and bad decisions. Gabbert played the game in an extreme conservative manner a will be most remebered for his fear of getting hit. I've never seen anyone shy away from contact as much as he did in his brief career here. It was strange.

What?....meaning if his last name was Bartkowski, he'd be a better QB?? :teehee:

Even i chuckled at that one
Bortles is in a kind of no-win situation. I think he could use another year in college to be seasoned a bit. However, next year he's going to be dumped into the draft with Jameis (probably) and Mariota (definitely). Either way, he'll never be regarded as the best QB in his draft. He may as well come out now and take his chances, especially if the media hype train pulls into Bortles Station. I wouldn't cry if we took him, but I'd love it if we moved down to do it, provided Bridgewater and Clowney are gone.
I dread the idea of any team jumping us but with the Rams its a real possibility.

First off, I hope you washed all exposed areas after leaving that place.
B. I didn't realize that hand size was a concern for Bridgewater. Regarding hand size, I remember reading an article about Terry Bradshaw and how his large hands greatly contributed to the velocity of his passes. He could hold the ball further back towards the cone and that allowed him increased velocity. I wonder if this may be a contributing factor to Bridgewater's perceived less than elite arm strength.

They already announced they are shopping their pick. They are set on pass rushers and probably will stick with Bradford again. With Saffold becoming a FA and Long tearing his ACL though, they may want to draft a tackle. If Cleveland jumped ahead though, they could still probably get a tackle and have another pick on top of that unfortunately. If Bridgewater gets taken #1 and someone jumped ahead of us to take Bortles, I'd be happy with Clowney.

Troy Aikman too. The guy has some monster mitts. Hand size is a pretty big concern. Guys like Brees and Russell Wilson don't measure up in terms of height but have large hands.

Yep, and Leftwich had small hands. That combined with his propensity to hold onto the ball forever, led to more fumbles.
Hand size for a QB (and a lot of NFL posititons, for that matter) is important.
The one problem I have with Clowney, besides his motor/attitude is that he is pretty stiff. For as big, quick, and fast as he is, he's pretty upright. He'll only be fast in a straight line - change of direction he's too stiff to display his athleticism.

I was at the NFL Experience when it was in Jacksonville during the Super Bowl. They had a display of NFL quarterbacks hand sizes. I am 6'2 and have normal size hands for my height. My hands were dwarfed by some of them. Jim Kelly and Aikman were two I remember.

I'm glad someone else finally said this. I knew I wasn't crazy for noticing the same thing. I thought maybe my eyes were deceiving me (given all the Clowney hype) , but yes, I also noticed what you cite.
I for one do think it's justifiable to call Bortles a very possible, even likely 'Gabbert 2.0', and no I don't call every QB I don't like that. For example, I may have my reservations with Teddy, but I would never say he's a Gabbert-clone. So why Bortles then?
Because he's been given an extra push up the draft board because of his supposed NFL-standard size/build/strength/etc(just like Gabbert did undeservedly so). For looking back now in hindsight, and judging Gabbert solely on what he did on the field at Missouri, it's clear that he was NOT a top-10 pick/franchise guy. But his supposed 'perfect size' pushed him higher than he should have been. And if we're honest with ourselves, Bortles is benefiting from the same thing.
In other words, if you had never actually 'seen' the QBs, and were blindly told the statistics of Manziel and Bortles, and the teams they played against, no one in their right mind would ever choose Bortles. But like Gabbert, he's pushing up the draft board because of his supposed 'NFL size'.
And so no, it's not that he plays like Gabbert, or is destined to fail like Gabbert did. Only that he's getting the same push that Gabbert did, more for his size than his actual play. Buyers beware.
I'd be alright if we ended up with Bortles. I dont know that I like him at 3 overall. But I dont really like any of these QBs at 3 overall. They all have big question marks to me. But its a QB league. Thats all the matters. So you get them where you can.
I do think Bortles can be a good NFL QB. I've said before but I think as far as a college scouting report, he is a bigger version of Dalton with a slightly better arm. And I think he handles pressure a little better than Dalton. Although I thought Dalton was fine with that in college. Again Bortles doesnt do anything great but he seems to do everything well and almost always make the smart play. He is effective throwing down the field(moreso than Teddy as the stats indicate) and the guy is a winner. He leads his team on clutch drives when they need a score.
Last night wasnt a great game for him but you look up and he has 300 yards a bunch of TDs and actually ran effectively. He wasnt asked to throw down the field much but then again he didnt have to. We all remember when Tom Brady was like 26-28 in the playoff game against us 6 or so years ago. He only threw one pass more than 5 yards down the field all game. But it worked. Last night Baylor's CBs were basically holding on to UCF's WR in tight coverage all game long. Spread them out horizontally and Baylor couldnt stop it. He had two picks but I thought both were great plays by the defense.
Ideally you could get a guy like Bortles early in the 2nd but Im not sure that is possible. Ideally we wouldnt have to trade half our draft to move up for Teddy but Im not sure thats possible. We'll probably have give up more than we want for whatever QB we draft unless we luck out.
If we could get Clowney in the first and Bortles in the second I'd be happy with that
Quote:If we could get Clowney in the first and Bortles in the second I'd be happy with that
He won't last until the second round. The NFL is too QB hungry.
Quote:I don't know if this is an insult
Its not. That is the only problem with Gabbert that he's scared as hell to show his talent.

Khalil Mack looks way more fluid. Not that I'd draft him ahead of Clowney, but he's right there behind him. Clowney still dominates the heck out of the competition.
