after the draft most of this board did too... after every recent draft a bunch of people on this board go way overboard predicting astronomical wins the following season only to be disappointed...happens every year...many posters on this very board expects us to go from bottom feeders to powerhouse after every draft
If Caldwell were to get fired, he would be picked up quick by another team needing a new GM...He is well respected and the people in the NFL circle like the way he has been drafting...He wouldnt be unemployed long

Wasn't Gene Smith well respected in NFL circles?
I think Caldwell did alright. What we see, in my opinion, is a coaching issue. There's talent but no development. No discipline, penalties, you name it.

I'd be OK giving Cladwell another coach. It isn't like Caldwell can use the rebuilding excuse. Give him 2 years and boot both of them if it doesn't work out.

Quote:I don't see an argument for firing Caldwell. The list of players he's added through the draft and free agency is good. I have no criticism there other than on the o-line. However, poor o-line play is a league wide problem due to the garbage college offenses. It makes drafting o-linemen hard.

He hired the worst head coach in NFL history.

He has missed on two top 5 picks.

IDK but I dont recall hearing any NFL Execs saying how well Gene drafted, or NFL analysts grading him with A's  like they are with Caldwell
My biggest concern with DC is he seems to be a "needs" drafter rather than "best available".

It's certainly understandable that a GM is trying to fill holes. The Yeldon pick comes immediately to mind. Still see it as a huge reach to fill a position of need.

So what do you guys think? Do you draft for need or do you draft best available?

at the time Gus was a hot name ...an up and coming DC ready for the next step..at the time it seemed like a good hire...

There are plenty of idiots on the board so what.

You are just delusional.  After this job he may never get another GM gig again.  After 4 years we are about 0 improved

I think it's irrelevant.  BAP vs needs isn't actually a thing. They're just buzz words. Teams pick players that best improve their roster.  This usually breaks the rules of both philosophies.

nawww he will be picked up quick...It's not caldwells fault gus and his guys can't develop players and gus is too stubborn to change his scheme
How about no?

Who is Bradley's boss?  It's Dave Caldwell.  Who was in for the hire of Bradley?  It's Dave Caldwell.  Who agreed to give Gus an Extension?  It's Dave Caldwell. etc etc

If Caldwell went to Khan and said He wanted Gus gone, Khan would back him.

It's not all about Coaching either.  Joeckle lacks the strength to play LT in the nfl, Bortles can't make wide open throws, Fowler is not an edge rusher, the offensive and defense line continue to be a problem after 4 years.  The coaches are responsible but they can only coach average talent so far.   Caldwell has missed on his drafts.  My first question I had about him was he retained some of Gene Smith's college scouts.  It all starts with the top.
Quote:thats an easy answer...we have to keep Bortles because we have no one better to replace him with...Sad but true..

We could trade Bortles to the 49ers for Gabbert??

Yep. Still doesn't take away the fact that he hired him. A historically awful head coach.

WRONG! Khan is on record multiple times saying he does not believe that firing a coach mid season makes a big enough difference to the season so it makes no sense to do it... that last paragraph is all coaching...caldwell by nfl execs and analysts say he has drafted well...

You are so hell bent on saying he has missed on his drafts that you discount what others have posted showing that he has more hits than misses...but dont let the FACTS stand in your way...

If only there was a crystal ball to look into before you actually hired a person to make sure he is what you think he will be a few years down the road...sorry no luck! He took a shot it didn't work out, time to move on

Hiring the head coach is arguably the most important decision a GM makes. Caldwell hired a historically bad head coach and should be held accountable for it.

The second most important decision a GM makes is when he's picking a QB in the top 10. Caldwell looks to have failed at that too.
