The well-discussed mechanical issues with Bortles could still prove fixable, given the right coaching.


But is there a deeper problem here - his seeming inability to learn from his mistakes? His size and athleticism have got him this far and I accept he might never be the intelligent "surgeon" quarterback who out-thinks the opposition, but I think by now we should expect him not to repeat the same errors, over and over. It makes me question if the mental side of his game has developed as fully as it should.


And if not, is that down to bad coaching and bad schemes or a basic inability to learn?

Blake Bortles learned from many mistakes. His mechanical issues are definitely fixable. We will see what happens with his position coach's promotion to OC.

What do you mean by the same errors? I can't really remember a throw this year where I said to myself "what a horrible decision" but to be fair his accuracy has been atrocious so maybe he is still making bad mental plays but the throw isn't there. 

 

The INT against SD was bad but Hurns and Greene were running side by side so it sounded like someone messed up a route but I dont know. Most of his INTs have been on bad throws and not necessarily bad decisions. Also like 5 of his INTs have been on tipped balls or balls that bounced off of A-Rob, which some of those were bad throws but the ball could've been tipped anywhere and he was just unlucky that it was tipped straight up in the air.

I have to agree here. He hasn't made many head scratching decisions this year. A couple of poorly placed balls which would have been great had they been thrown better. But nothing really horrible decision wise

Football isn't rocket science, and he's plenty smart enough to read a defense and react.  That being said, something has rattled his confidence this year.  Hopefully he's able to work through it and get back to being productive.

Hes learning to aviid the OC gameplan after 45 mins and do his iwn thing I the 4th. Maybe he should do that for 60 mins lol

Him being dumb doesnt bother me as much as his throwing motion. I feel like his football iq is the easier fix and can be managed with a good scheme as well, the throwing motion is gonna take relentless work.

I hate to admit it, but I did kind of peg Bortles as someone who was certainly going to be more strong than smart. It was one of those auxiliary weaknesses in Bortles' game that I kind of noticed last year. His penchant for making bone-headed plays at awful times at least once a week was the give away.


It wasn't something I thought would be a serious negative and I still feel that way going forward. He seems to be knowledgeable enough and like he cares enough about the game to easily overcome what he's lacking upstairs. It's his physical inability to throw the football in a consistent manner because it's not how he's used to doing it; that's the problem. Tebow had the same problem. It's one of the biggest hurdles for a QB to overcome I've now learned. Blake's gotta fix his junk mechanics asap.

He seems to read the defense a little late sometimes and then throws the ball behind the receiver. If the running game ever rears is head, then he will more closely resemble last year's form.

That's a huge factor here.  The non-existent running game puts more pressure on an already struggling QB.

Further goes to show how useless the wonderlic is. Vince spent 35 million dollars and went bankrupt, if only in part because he was spending 10 grand a pop at the cheesecake factory multiple nights per week, you know, the place with the $7 appetizers. He took a loan out for around a million bucks to cover his birthday party expenses during the 2011 lockout.


Blake is dumb. He's not Vince Young status though.

Methinks you are just making things up for the sake of making them up. Blake scored a 28 (average QB is 24). 28 is the same as Russell Wilson and higher than Carson Palmer. Vince scored a 16.

It was a terrible throw. If it was in the back corner it would have been a td. Sure there were better options, but we needed points.
