he is taking many fewer shots downfield.  In fact last year he threw the ball quite a lot downfield, whereas this year he has not.

 

This is why his completion percentage is a little higher.

I am not referring to downfield as traditional downfield. I am referring to downfield as not a dump down pass to a HB 10 times a game.

31 of Bortles 290 throws have been targeted for Yeldon with 15 of those 31 coming in the first 2 games.

 

yeah he threw the ball to Yeldon for 8 catches for a total of 10 yards against the Chargers this year.

 

those kind of playcalls and decision making is the reason he is at 60% which is higher than his average.  He's not throwing the ball down the field as much as he did before.

They drafted a QB a round after the Jags took Bortles.  Why would they do that if they knew Tom Brady was not going anywhere?  Maybe because history dictates that you need to have a guy in the wings when your franchise QB starts to wind down?

there was one instance against San Diego where he did exactly that (well, 8 catches for 10 yards).

 

It was to make a point.  I'm not saying he's just throwing to RBs.. but he is checking down a lot more this year and we are not throwing the ball deep like we did last year.  With the same personnel and the same coaching staff.  Why?  I don't know.

And he is 0-10 on throws that travel 20+ yards in the air this year too.

There were a lot of quick screens to start the year as well but that has stopped. As well as most check down passes. That quick screen to Yeldon before the half at the Chargers game may still be the most frustrating play call of the year for me. He is still on pace to throw for 4400 yards with worst in the league mechanics and no confidence. This off-season coming up is extremely important to his career but we all know that. I just hope he realizes its time to change whatever it is he is doing to work on his game. He needs a whole new routine and that goes way beyond mechanics.

We as a fan base need to stop looking at pure numbers.  They are misleading and cloud the argument.  Any QB that starts 16 games that throws it around this many times will throw for 4000 yards. 

 

I need to see him take command of this team and score early.  We need to build leads.  We need him to have games where he throws 3 TDs in the first half (we have seen him throw 3 in garbage time a few times before).

 

I think the playcalling can and will get better, but I am just a skeptic that Bortles has what it takes to be an effective starter.  Each week he continues to give me more evidence and makes my skepticism stronger.  Do I hope I'm wrong?  YES absolutely.  But I don't have faith in him.  Faith is believing in someone/something without evidence or IN SPITE of evidence to the contrary.  It is not a position I can defend when it comes to Bortles and this team.

Agree. Which is why I hate when we always defer. I am not sure of the exact number but I bet that Bortles rarely gets 2 full possessions in the first quarter. He, as well as the team, get behind the 8 ball so quickly and leads to everyone pressing. When pressing doesn't work it leads to panic. When you panic you lose. There is no margin of error with this team. But once again I am just stating what we all know.
